Carlisle wins MJT playoff at Cooke; Johnson takes Low Overall title

Prince Albert, SK. (May 22, 2017) – Jace Carlisle triumphed in a playoff against Reegan Robinson, both Juveniles from Estevan, SK, but it was Kade Johnson, of Yorkton, SK who took home the overall medalist honors and Junior Boys title in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s season opener in Saskatchewan at Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert over the May long weekend.

Players were competing for the Hoselton trophy in six divisions as well as for shortlisted age-specific exemptions into the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego, CA, this July. The MJT members shortlisted for these spots were Ella Kozak (Yorkton), Sarah Grieve (Saskatoon), Raylyn Schmidt (Moose Jaw), Colin Pastiney (St. Paul. AB), TJ Baker (Waskesiu, SK), and Kade Johnson. Finalists will be announced once qualifying finishes across the country.

In addition to the individual division champions featured below, overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website here which show winner details for the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards. 

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Kade Johnson, 18, fired brilliant rounds of 67, 73=140 to take home the low overall and MJT Junior Boys title by seven strokes over PA local, Josh Guthrie, 17. “I feel happy that I was able to compete and put two good rounds together,” said Johnson, “I stayed patient and consistent.”

MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16:  Jace Carlisle, 15, shot 76,75 = 151 to tie for the MJT Juvenile Boys lead with Reegan Robinson, 16, 7=151), in the tightest race of the weekend, leading to a playoff which Carlisle won. “It is my first win, and I feel like I can play with these guys now. I struggled in the past here, and glad I figured it out,” he said.  “I made a lot of great putts down the stretch.”

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: TJ Baker, 14, of Waskesiu, SK, came through with solid scores of 75, 82 = 157 to edge a one-stroke victory over Cort Tunall, 13, of Kindersley, SK, and claim the MJT Bantam Boys 13-14 title. Baker, who rated the course and conditions ‘eight out of 10’, stated afterwards, “I feel awesome, there’s nothing better than winning. The best thing about my game was hitting my drives 250 to 275 yards.”

MJT Peewee Boys: The MJT Peewee Boys winner was Colin Pasitney, 12, of St. Paul, AB, after he shot 82,77 = 159, running away with a 15-stroke margin of victory. “I played good, and I feel like I made new friends,” he said. “I had a lot of confidence and kept the ball out of any trouble. MJT is the best and also very fun to play.”

MJT Girls: Sarah Grieve, 14, of Saskatoon, SK, shot 97,100 = 197 and held off Ella Kozak, 11, of Yorkton, SK, by two strokes to won the MJT Girls U15 title, stating, “I feels good about winning because it helps me feel confident going into the new season.” The MJT Girls 15-18 division saw Raylyn Schmidt, 15, of Moose Jaw, SK, come out to shoot 87,99 = 186, and state, “This gives me the confidence for playing in a higher age group this year. I played MJT last year, and had so much fun and got to meet a lot of new people.”

The next Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in the province is the MJT Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit / Prodigy Series at Lloydminster Golf Club in Lloydminster on June 3 and 4, which is followed by the MJT Golf Saskatchewan OOM Series presented by Ilta Grain at Chinook Golf Course, Swift Current, on July 1 and 2.
