Hot scores highlight MJT Edge School Summer Classic at Coyote Creek; Kern and Ion win low overall titles

 

Another large field of 93 teed it up in Alberta on Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour, the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, this past week, in the MJT Edge School Summer Classic at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Sundre. This three-day WAGR-ranked event on August 14, 15, and 16 was last major on the MJT Alberta circuit, with titles in six divisions plus major MJT Order of Merit points up for grabs, aimed towards qualification into the season-ending MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Arizona this November.

Tournament Sponsor, Edge School, were on site to witness some great performances on the immaculately conditioned Coyote Creek course, in extremely hot weather just like the scoring.  Top finisher scores and winner quotes are detailed below, while results from the TaylorMade Long Drive, PLYR Closest to the Pin, Booster Juice BounceBack Awards and Academy Points, are posted on the MJT website here.  Many players posted personal bests for the week, with Mateo Kern and Tessa Ion, both of Calgary, AB, firing three great rounds to finish at three-under and one-over par respectively, winning Low Overall honours and their division titles in MJT Juvenile Boys and MJT Girls 15-19.  Other division winners were Saylar May of Rocky Mountain House, AB, finishing at four-over in the MJT Girls U15 Division, Erik Petersen of Okotoks, AB, in the MJT Peewee Boys Division, Lucas Sturgeon, all the way from Saskatoon, SK, who finished at a fantastic four-under par in MJT Bantam Boys, and Aidan Flynn of Calgary winning MJT Junior Boys with a great score of even par for the week.

Saylar May, 14, of Rocky Mountain House, AB, played flawless golf and finished the week five shots clear of her nearest competitor to win the MJT U15 Girls Division title.  “It feels really good to win, I hit the ball great all week and this course sets up good for me,” said May.  “My thoughts were on fairway and greens.”

The MJT Girls 15-19 Division title and Low Overall honours were won by 16-year-old Tessa Ion of Calgary, AB, who fired amazing scores of 71-71-72 to finish at one-over par on the tough Coyote Creek track.  “It feels good to win and have my game back in place,” said Ion.  “The course set up good for me and was in great condition; a very fun week.”

Erik Petersen, 11, of Okotoks, AB, played stellar golf, posting three consecutive rounds in the 70’s to win the MJT Peewee Boys Division title.  “It feels good, more competition,” said Petersen.  “Coming down the stretch, I just tried to play solid.”

Making the trip to the tournament in Sundre worth his while was 13-year-old Lucas Sturgeon from Saskatoon, SK, who won the MJT Bantam Boys title after posting the low score in relation to par for the entire event, finishing at a fantastic four-under.  “I feel joyful and proud of myself, I believe in myself,” said Sturgeon.  “I just tried to enjoy it and hold on coming in.”

A phenomenal final round of 67 edged out a one stroke victory and Low Overall Honours for Mateo Kern, 16, of Calgary, AB, the MJT Juvenile Boys Division winner, who finished the week at three-under par for his third title of the season.  “It feels amazing to win!” said Kern.  “I played average for the first two days and felt great to post a score with little mistakes.  I just tried to stay calm and not get ahead of myself.”

A rock-solid performance by Aidan Flynn, 18, of Calgary, AB, delivered a six-stroke victory in the MJT Junior Boys Division after he fired a final round of one-under par 70 to hold off his nearest rivals.  “It feels amazing,” said Flynn. “This is my first win in four years, it feels really good to be back.”
