MANY GREAT SCORES ON MOTHER’S DAY AT MJT’S MEADOWS STOP

Players qualify for events in New York and South Carolina
EAST ST. PAUL, MB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) season-opener in Manitoba was held at The Meadows Golf Club in East St. Paul on May 10th and 11th, a triple qualifier for three major international events. Exemptions to be awarded included spots to the East Aurora International Junior Masters (EAIJM) in New York State, and to the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Some outstanding scores were posted by the young golfers despite the freezing cold, starting with a 2-under-par two-day total of 140 from Burke Nagle, 19 of Winnipeg, MB (72-68), who edged out Derek East, 18, also of Winnipeg, by just one stroke to clinch the spot for low overall score and the Boys 17 and up division title. East posted a 69 on day two to finish at 72-69=141, while third place in the division was claimed by Burke Wiebe, 17, also of Winnipeg, who shot the low round for the tournament of 5-under-par to vault up the ranks (75-67=142). Wiebe, who qualified for MJT Team Canada to Mexico in 2007, now receives the exemption into the EAIJM for boys aged 14 to 17.

MacGILLIVARY AND CHELLE TOP QUALIFIERS AT MJT’S STONY PLAIN STOP

STONY PLAIN, AB – After two false starts in April due to the unexpected snow, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) first multi-day tournament of the season in Alberta was held at Stony Plain Golf Club in Stony Plain, AB, on May 10th and 11th. The tournament was a double qualifier for two major international events - the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA. The course was in excellent shape for the two-day tournament and the strong field of junior golfers from far and wide enjoyed decent weather both days except for a light shower and some wind.
Despite being very sick with flu-like symptoms, local Brett MacGillivary, 17, of Stony Plain, held off Craig Bloom, 17, of Calgary, with steady rounds of 74-74 (148) to win low overall, the Boys 17 and up division title, and a spot on MJT Team Canada to Mexico. “This is my first MJT win, it means quite a bit,” said MacGillvary, who has been playing the Tour for the past four seasons. “Playing MJT helps my game with multi-day tournaments and good players and my goal is to play well in all events and make nationals.” Bloom shot 75-75 (150) to finish second in the division, always looking back at Chase Teron, 18, of Red Deer, who shot 77-77=154 for third place.

CLEGG AND LEE JOIN MJT TEAM CANADA AFTER MJT`S HSBC BANK CANADA CLASSIC

SURREY, B.C. – Cool weather prevailed during the two-day Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) HSBC Bank Canada Classic at Hazelmere Golf Club in Surrey, B.C., this past Mother’s Day weekend. The event was a double qualifier for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Team Matches in St. Andrews, U.K., and the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Third-year MJT member Harrison Clegg, 15, of Langley, fired 75-72 (147) to claim low overall and the HSBC Bank Canada Classic Boys 14-16 division title in style, earning a spot on MJT Team Canada. Clegg, who cited his tournament highlight as his eagle on the 12th hole from the fairway, said he was coming down the stretch thinking, ‘Don’t make any large numbers.’ Runner-up in his division was China Junior Open champion Kevin Lee, 13, of Surrey, who has opted to play up a division. Lee, who also qualified for MJT Team Canada, shot back-to-back rounds of 75 for a 150 total score.

MJT’S CAMBRIDGE EVENT SENDS 8 TO FLORIDA, ILLINOIS AND NEW YORK
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. – Heavy rain may have shortened play to 27 holes for most competitors in the opening tournament of the Maple Leaf Junior Tour (MJT) Ontario Series held at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge on May 3rd and 4th, but spirits were high as eight players earned exemptions into three prestigious international events.

Golfers from Ontario, New Brunswick and New York battled the elements and each other to win spots into the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Florida, the World Youth Team Challenge (WYTC) at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Illinois, and the 56th East Aurora International Junior Masters (EAIJM) at East Aurora Golf Club in New York.
Mother nature returned with a brisk wind and sun for day two and some wonderful rounds were posted with each of the four divisions having battles right up to the 18th hole. MJT rookie Thomas Keddy, 19, of Shenstone, NB, came up the overall winner with scores of 34-73 (107) for the tournament opening, which drew its largest field ever. Wet, brisk conditions didn’t faze this player in the Boys 17 and Up Division, who hopes to get down to a scratch handicap on the MJT this year through precision putting and improved accuracy with his irons.
