Seven MJT division champions crowned at Carstairs

Carstairs, AB - (May 15, 2017) – Junior golfers battled through some tricky spring weather with wind and hail in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s two day stop at Carstairs Golf Club in Carstairs, Alberta, on Mother’s Day weekend, where players were vying for titles in seven divisions as well as age-specific spots in the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Championship in San Diego this July.

Jessica Marks, 17, of Calgary, AB, had a hole-in-one in round one, winning her a special Miura gift certificate. Other event highlights are posted on the tournament page on the MJT website, showing winners of the PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards, as well as more details on the players short-listed for the Junior Worlds: Grace Bell, Sydney Scraba, Thomas Sluka and Josh DiCarlo. Finalists will be announced once qualifying finishes across the country. Each of the division champions are highlighted below:

MJT Peewee Boys: Logan Graf, 12, of Red Deer, AB, shot rounds of 79,73=152, to take home the MJT Hoselton trophy for Peewee boys the second week in a row, following up his victory in Lethbridge the previous weekend. Graf was asked how he felt winning this division title, and responded, “Good, it was my low round in a tournament to date.” The strength of his game this weekend was ‘chipping, it must have saved me eight or nine times today.’

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: Thomas Sluka, 13, of Canmore, AB, fired outstanding rounds of 72, 71 = 143,  good for a six-stroke victory in the MJT Bantam Boys division, even though runner-up Naoki Iwasaki shot the low round of day two with a stellar 67. Sluka said he felt, “great, for the first MJT of the year,” in claiming the division title. He chose to play the MJT this week because, “it is a qualifier for a couple of tournaments, and maybe the best Tour in the country.”

MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16: Josh DiCarlo, 16, of Amherstburg, ON, made the trip to the tournament worth his while by firing solid scores of 72, 73 = 145 to win the MJT Juvenile Boys Hoselton trophy. It was a very close race with Brad McKinlay, 16, of Lacombe, AB, coming on strong with a second round 72, but it just wasn’t enough to catch DiCarlo, who, when asked about how he felt winning his division, said, “It feels pretty good, it’s only my second tournament of the year, and it’s a pretty good start.”

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Connor Tate, 17, of Kindersley, SK, carded 74, 75 = 149 to win the MJT Junior Boys division by four strokes over Justin Loro of Calgary, AB. Tate said, “This was a good test of golf, the greens were tricky. With my game, everything inside 100 yards was dialed in, and my putting was on point as well.”

MJT Collegiate Men 19-23: The new MJT Collegiate division title went to Andrew Widjaja, 19, of Calgary, after he shot 75, 74 = 149 to win by six strokes over Logan Hill, 19, of Red Deer, AB.

MJT Girls 15-18: MJT Girls 15-18 champion, Sydney Scraba, 16, of Calgary, posted consistent rounds of 79,82 = 161, and bested Abigail Hartzler, 16, of Carstairs, by four strokes. Scraba said, “It feels really good, it has been a while and nice that I accomplished this. It is my first win on the MJT, and it is Mother’s Day!”

MJT Girls U15: In the MJT U15 Girls Division, Stephanie Chelack, 14, of Calgary, shots rounds of 84,75 = 159, and cruised to a twelve-shot win over Grace Bell, 13, also of Calgary. Chelack said, “It’s nice to start the MJT season with a win, especially in those conditions, with the wind and the hail.”

This event also featured a MJT Mini Tour on May 13, for kids aged 12 and under; results can be seen here: Mini Tour Results.

The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in Alberta is the MJT Humber College PGM Classic at Fairmont Banff Springs, in Banff, May 21 and 22, followed by the MJT Alberta Series at Cottonwood Golf and Country Club in Calgary on June 3 and 4.
