Juniors Weather the Storm in Season-Opener
on Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour

TSAWWASSEN, B.C.: The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held its season-opener this past weekend at the Morgan Creek Golf Club in South Surrey, B.C. The full field of junior golfers, who came from as far away as Manitoba, Alberta and Fort St. John, battled through cold rain and high winds in the two day tournament, which was sponsored by golf apparel company, Turtle Creek Collection.

Highlights of round one included 14-year-old local Ahnna Kim?s two-under-par, her best tournament score to date, and a three-under-par 69 from University of British Columbia golf team member Michael Landry. Landry posted a second round score of 74 to finish at one-under-par for the two day tournament, winning the Boys 17 and up division.

Runner-up to Landry was Devin Carrey from South Surrey (80-71=151), followed by Abbotsford?s Adam Hadwin in third place (74-78=152) and Merritt?s Roger Sloan in fourth (76-77=153).

Caroline Kim from Port Coquitlam pulled ahead amongst the girls with rounds of 74-72 for an even-par total of 146 to win the Girls division champion title and an exemption into the Future Collegian?s World Tour?s (FCWT) National Championship at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA, May 28-30, 2005.

Second place in the Girls division went to Julie Kim, also from Port Coquitlam (75-76=151), third place to Jessica Wallace from Langley (73-79=152), and fourth place to Dominique Pytlewski from West Vancouver (76-77=153).

The Boys 14-16 division champion title was won by Darren Wallace from Langley, current Canadian Amateur Champion and playing his seventh season on the MJT. Wallace shot back-to-back even par rounds of 72 for a solid 144 total score in the tough conditions and also won an exemption into the FCWT National Championship in Florida.

Brett Webster from Abbotsford placed second to Wallace (74-74=148), and fellow Abbotsford player Nick Taylor placed third one stroke back at 149. Third place was a tie between North Vancouver?s Eugene Wong (76-76=152) and Thomas Petts (71-81=152).

The Boys 13 and under division title was swept away by Brian Cho from Pitt Meadows, with rounds of 74-75 for a 147 total score. Runner-up was Reid Martin from Mukilteo, WA (77-80=157), followed by James Fahy from Vancouver in third place (78-81=159) and Brian Lichimo from North Vancouver in fourth place (77-88=166).

Division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive competition were Reid Martin, Nick Taylor and Caroline Kim. Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition division winners were Jon Strasdin (Prince George), Ryan Brooks (Pitt Meadows), Ben Towner (Port Coquitlam) and Kristina Gargaro (Port Moody).

Turtle Creek Collection mock-necks were given to every player courtesy of tournament sponsor Turtle Creek, and MJT official sponsors Callaway Golf, Cleveland Golf and Ogio awarded great prizes to the top finishers. Additionally, the Hunt family from Penticton, B.C. were drawn as the winners of the Webber Naturals Gift Basket, a new feature at events in B.C. this year in recognition of parental support that makes it possible for juniors to participate in the program.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Tour, now in its 7th season, is presented by Boston Pizza and runs multi-day tournaments for young golfers from Vancouver to Halifax. The MJT is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian Golf Professionals and is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.

The next local event is the MJT Canadian University Coaches Classic at Swan-e-set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows, BC, March 28-29.
