Strong field, playoffs and low scores in MJT Mini Tour Junior Worlds Qualifier at Cultus Lake
Canada’s next generation of talent was on full display at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Mini Tour Uswing Mojing Junior Worlds Qualifier, where a field of young golfers aged 12 and under teed it up at Cultus Lake Golf Club in Cultus Lake, BC, on April 19. Battling for highly coveted direct qualifying spots into the Uswing Mojing Junior Worlds in San Diego, CA, this July, the MJT Mini Tour National Championship, in Tsawwassen, BC, on August 30–31, and the MJT Mini Tour OOM Invitational at Quilchena GC in Richmond, BC, on May 23, young athletes delivered impressive performances in a high-energy and competitive environment.
Across six age divisions, winners were rewarded with ZEAL sunglasses and custom medals, marking a standout day on Canada’s number one-played junior tour.
The MJT Boys 11–12 division delivered a dramatic finish in a playoff, as Taylor Chu (10) of Vancouver, BC, defeated Harrison MacEwan (11) of Abbotsford, BC, after both players tied at 75. Chu sealed the victory with a birdie on the second extra hole, capping off an exciting battle. “I feel really proud of myself, and I'm really happy of this huge accomplishment,” he said. “MJT really helped me interact with other great players and got me to know the course better.”
Stella Sun (10) of White Rock, BC, captured the MJT Girls 11–12 title with a strong round of 67, bouncing back in impressive fashion on the back nine to secure the win. “I haven't won a tournament in a long time,” she shared. Reflecting on her round, Sun added, “I got a bogey and a double on the back nine, but I quickly got back by a birdie and par on the last few holes.”
Allen Kong (10) of Vancouver, BC, delivered a standout performance in the MJT Boys 9–10 division, firing a remarkable 63 to take the title. His impressive round highlighted both skill and composure in a competitive field. “It feels great because I had a lot of fun and also love that this is a Junior Worlds Qualifier,” said Kong. “The greens were in mint condition.”
Annabel Zhao (10) of Richmond, BC, continued her strong play with a dominant performance in the MJT Girls 9–10 division, posting a two-under-par 61 to secure the win. “It felt great to win this tournament and I'm really proud of my score,” she said. Praising the event, Zhao added, “Perfect 10/10. Today was great weather. The event is very well organized.”
The MJT Boys 8U division saw another playoff finish, as Gavin Shi (8) of Burnaby, BC, defeated Sawyer Morrow (7) of Vancouver, BC, after both players battled to the top of the leaderboard. Shi clinched the title with a birdie on the first extra hole, concluding a memorable victory in one of the day’s most exciting finishes.
Anna Song (8) of Vancouver, BC, claimed the MJT Girls 8U title with a score of 77, showcasing determination and focus to come out on top in her division and cap off a strong performance on the course.
