Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Mini Tour for 12U boys and girls enjoys new stop in Sussex Corner, NB

 

The great game of golf continued to see growth in Atlantic Canada this past weekend, where a field of 63 young players aged from six to 18 took part in the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s stop at the challenging Sussex Golf and Curling Club in Sussex Corner, New Brunswick. The juniors were competing on Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour in either the two-day Junior Tour (19U) event on June 10 and 11, or the one-day Mini Tour (12U) event on June 10. Results of the Mini Tour are highlighted here.

Two very young golfers, Alex MacDonald, 8, of Fall River, NS, and Xavier Wheaton, 9, of Memramcook, NS, qualified for the season-ending MJT Mini Tour National Championship in British Columbia this August, joining Borden Nicholson, 10, of Pictou, NS, who is already exempt.  Top finisher scores with winner quotes are noted below.

MJT Girls 8U: Sussex G&CC: Par 72, Ydg 3000

Ariyah Sock, Elsipogtog First Nation, NB, F, 6                                  66-63 (129)

Six-year-old Ariyah Sock, from Elsipogtog First Nation, had a great day at Sussex G&CC, where she finished with a score of 129.  “I have been going to the range and putting green with my brother,” said Sock.

Alex MacDonald, 8, of Fall River, NS, played steady golf to win the MJT Boys 8U Division title.  When asked about his victory, MacDonald said, “I had fun with my friends and took my time.  I have been working on my putting.”

Borden Nicholson, 10, of Pictou, NS, picked up his second win of the season at Sussex G&CC, pulling away from the field with a solid 40 on the back nine.  Nicholson, who is already exempt for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship, claimed the MJT Boys 9-10 Division title. When asked about what he is working on, Nicholson said he is currently “working on my mental game.  My driver and putter were on today.”

MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs GC, BC: Alex MacDonald (Fall River, NS) and Xavier Wheaton (Memramcook, NB) – Nicholson is already exempt.
