Deibert and Melsted continue their winning ways on MJT Mini Tour at Wildwood

 

It was a beautiful day for golf on July 23 at the Wildwood Golf Course in Saskatoon, a new venue on the 2023 MJT Saskatchewan Mini Tour circuit, where a field of 12U players on Canada’s number-one played Junior Golf Tour competed in six age divisions over 18 holes, vying for trophies and prizes plus the chance to qualify for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, this August, 

Scores from the top finishers and quotes from each division winner are noted below. Closest to the Pin winners are posted on the MJT website here. Highlights included Alyxa Melstad, 10, of Wynyard, SK, winning her third MJT Girls 9-10 title of the season while Hudson Deibert, 8, of Regina, SK, won his fourth in MJT Boys 8U, as both players continue to dominate their divisions in the Saskatchewan U12 circuit. Rounding off the event was the presentation of $100 gift certificates for golf lessons courtesy the PGA of Saskatchewan to lucky winners Henry Silver, 12, of North Battleford, SK, and Tayzen Maddaford-Toth, 7, of Saskatoon, SK.

Makinlee McCrystal, 8, of Regina, SK, came out to compete in the MJT Girls 8U Division and played stellar golf on the difficult Wildwood track.  “Coming down the stretch, I was thinking that I can get my personal best,” stated McCrystal.

The MJT Girls 9-10 Division title was won by eight shots en route to her third victory of the season by Alyxa Melsted, 10, of Wynyard, SK.  “This feels good, it is my personal best,” said Melsted.  “It was really hot so I was just trying to keep the ball on the fairway.”

MJT newcomer Addison Hull, 11, of Dundurn, SK, played in her very first MJT event at Wildwood Golf Course and carded a 94 in the MJT Girls 11-12 Division.  “My thoughts were good and thinking I was playing good,” said Hall.

Winning his fourth event of the season was 8-year-old Hudson Deibert of Regina, SK, who was the only player to break par on the difficult Wildwood course, winning the MJT Boys 8U Division title.  “It feels amazing to win,” said Deibert.  “Coming down the stretch, I tried to swing my clubs smooth and hit good putts.”

Travelling all the way from Grand Cayman and making the trip worth his while was Adam Stepaniuk, 10, from George Town, who finished with a 35 on the back nine to pull away and win the MJT Boys 9-10 Division title by five strokes.  “It feels awesome to win,” said Stepaniuk.  “It was a lot of suspense and I feel like I played well.”

Hayden Solomko, 12, of Battleford, SK, won the MJT Boys 11-12 title in the tightest race in all divisions.  “It feels really good to win my second tournament,” said Solomko, playing in his first event of 2023 and adding another MJT win to his past records. “Coming down the stretch, I was just trying to make par.”
