MJT closes out record-breaking 2022 Season with hole-in-one and more in Ford Series at Mayfair Lakes
Venue and location: Mayfair Lakes Golf Course, Richmond, BC
Tournament Date: October 1-2, 2022
Tournament Highlights:
- The record-breaking regular season on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour ended with three full days of Ford-sponsored events that took place at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course in Richmond, BC, from September 30 through October 2, 2022, with 125 youth taking part altogether.
- The first event was the no-charge MJT Cam Clark Ford Richmond Go Golf! Junior Golf Clinic on September 30, which introduced kids in the community to the game for free; this was followed by the two-day MJT Ford Series at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course, a competitive tournament for elite junior golfers which also featured a hole-in-one contest to win a new car, sponsored by Cam Clark Ford Richmond. Results of the latter are highlighted below.
- Hyunjun Lee, 16, North Vancouver, BC, secured the low overall boys score after a strong second round score of 69 (-2), shooting 73-69=142 to win the MJT Juvenile Boys division in the face of a hard charge by Jason Yang, 16, of Coquitlam, BC. Yang fired a great final round of 70 to finish just one stroke back of Lee.
- Another fine score of 69 (-2) ensured the low overall girls title went to 14-year-old Elaine Liu of Vancouver, BC, who won the MJT Girls 15-19 division in style with two under-par rounds (69,71=140).
- Leighton Wright, 18, all the way from Barrie, ON, was the MJT Junior Boys winner after scoring great rounds of 76,74=150 for a two-stroke victory.
- An exciting hole-in-one on day two, by Jim Zhu, 13, of Vancouver, BC, helped ensure his victory in the MJT Bantam Boys division after his brilliant opening round of 68. Zhu, who aced Hole 8 and unfortunately not Hole 4 which would have won a new Ford vehicle, finished with rounds of 68,72=140 for a four-stroke lead over a two-way tie for second.
- A dominant performance from Jenny Kwon, 13, of Vancouver, BC, had her running away with the MJT Girls U15 division title after firing strong scores of 71,72=143.
- Back on top of the podium for one last time in the regular season was veteran champion, Jeevyn Lotay, 12, of Burnaby, BC, who secured his sixth win of the year in the MJT Peewee Boys division with rounds of 74,71=145, five strokes ahead of another two-way tie for second place.
- Winners of the Long Drive, Closest to the Pin and Booster Juice BounceBack awards are posted on the website.
- This was the final regular tour stop in the province for the program, as well as the final regular season MJT event for 2022. The invitation-only MJT National Championship presented by TaylorMade and adidas Golf runs in Orlando, FLA, this November. An Early Bird Membership for 2023 will be available in December.
