Morton, MacBain and Tait qualify for ITC at MJT’s Lionhead event

Brampton, ON. (July 17, 2017) – There were some tight battles in many of the divisions during the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Ontario Series at Lionhead Golf Club in Brampton on July 15 and 16, where players were also attempting to qualify for MJT Team Ontario in the International Team Challenge Matches (ITC) presented by Freedom 55 Financial in Niagara Falls this September.

Low Medalist honors belonged to Davey Morton, 17, of Woodstock, ON, as he posted a 68 on day two to defeat Ewan MacBain, 17, of Toronto, ON, winning the MJT Junior Boys title. Morton, who won by three strokes (77-68=145), said, “It feels good to win my third MJT of the year. My approach shots were the key, as I hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.” Both Morton and MacBain (71-77=148) qualified to play on MJT Team Ontario in the ITC.

In MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16, it was Isiah Katsube, 15, of Elmira, ON, who shot 75-81 (156) to win, defeating Jakob Ain, 15, of Toronto, by six strokes for the title. Katsube said the win made him feel ‘happy,’ and the key was, “my driving - my driver and three-iron off the tee.”

Graem Costigan, 14, of Cambridge, took home the MJT Bantam Boys 13-14 title in the closest race of the weekend after posting a strong two-day total of 151 (79-72) to hold off both Ryan Somerville, 13, of Aurora, ON (78-75), and Matthew Peesker, 14, of Toronto (76-77). Costigan, who cited the best part of his game as ‘mental and short game,’ said, “It feels really good (to win), this is my second win in my first year of competitive golf, so this is a really big confidence booster.”

Racking up their third MJT division titles to date this season were MJT Peewee Boys 11-12 winner Andre Zhu, 10, of Richmond Hill, ON, who shot rounds of 76-75 (151), and MJT Girls U15 winner Brooke Rivers, 12, of Brampton, who also shot 151 (78-73). Rivers said of her win, “I met lots of amazing people, and extremely enjoyed my rounds. My irons went on the green which helped me get pars, and the course was in great condition.”

Finally, in the MJT 15-18 Girls division, Tatiana Tait, 18, of Mannheim, ON, shot rounds of 92-85 (77) to win the title by four strokes over Tess Scaman, 17, of Chatham, ON, and qualify for MJT Team Ontario for the ITC in Niagara Falls. Tait, who rated her short game as the key to victory, said, “I feel great about wining my division title especially because of the challenge the course posed.”

Full results and overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE, showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards.
