Horton Ties Competitive Course Record en Route to MJT Victory

DeWinton, AB (June 5, 2017) – Over 80 Juniors were competing in seven age divisions on Canada’s number one played Junior Golf Tour at the prestigious Cottonwood Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, this past weekend, where 18-year old Chris Horton shot a 64 in round two and in the process tied the competitive course record at the Club.

In addition to this major achievement by Horton, overall event highlights are posted on the MJT website HERE showing winners of the Miura ‘Respect the Game’ Award, PLYR Long Drive, PLYR Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Performance Awards. The event also served as a Qualifier for the Nordic Junior Team Matches in Finland this Fall.

MJT Junior Boys 17-18: Chris Horton, 18, of Calgary, AB shot (71-64) and his 135 total for two rounds was enough to capture the division by eight strokes. Horton said, “The win feels unreal! 64 is my lowest round ever and to do it in competition makes it that much better.  I played this week because it fit my schedule and I enjoy playing MJT.” Horton is now short-listed for the Nordic Junior Team Matches.

MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16: Brady McKinlay, 16, of Lacombe, AB (69-69 = 138). McKinlay’s two-day total of 138 easily took home the juvenile title by 10-strokes. McKinlay stated, “This is my first big win. It is awesome!  I played here because last year at the Alberta Junior at Cottonwood I played poorly, and this year I wanted revenge.”  McKinlay is now also short-listed for the Nordic Junior Team Matches.

MJT Bantam Boys 13-14: Thomas Sluka, 13, of Canmore, AB (72,74=146). Sluka was excited and said, “This win feels great because I beat very good competition this week.  My highlight was finding out that I am heading to the IMG Junior Worlds next month (due to a previous top tournament result on the MJT). I love the MJT and Cottonwood was great.”

MJT Peewee Boys 11-12: Jaiden Koonar, 12, of Calgary, (82-75=157). Koonar said, “I am super excited about my win here.  It was fun and I played with good people.” Koonar’s 157 total edged out Ethan Wilson, 12, of St. Albert, AB, by four strokes for the Peewee Boys title.

MJT Girls 15-18: Annabelle Ackroyd, 15, of Calgary, (81-72 = 153). When asked how she feels about the win, Ackroyd responded, “This win feels great.  I have not been playing well lately and I had a tough start yesterday. My mental game was strong this week.  I stayed positive and in the moment.  I played this week because a lot of my friends were playing here and the MJT events are always well run so it fit.”

MJT Girls U15: Grace Bell, 13, of Calgary, (82-80=162).  “It feels great (to win)!” said Bell, “My playing partners were very supportive for me.  I had five birdies today and they cheered me on the entire day. The course condition was a 10 out of 10 for sure!”

MJT Collegiate Boys 19-23: Darin Bertschi, 19, of Lethbridge, AB (74-70=144). Bertschi’s 144 total was enough to edge Douglas Whitten, 22, of Medicine Hat, AB, who shot a 69 on day two, but came up two strokes short of Bertschi.
