Two playoffs needed at MJT’s rain-shortened Ambassador stop

Windsor, ON. – (June 1, 2015) – The story of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s two-day tournament on May 30th and 31st at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, ON, was the weather.  Saturday’s round one was hampered by two stoppages in play due to dangerous weather conditions.  At many times it seemed that the round was not going to be completed, but PGA of Canada Professional Adam Wagner and his staff did an excellent job of tracking the weather systems in the area allowing the juniors to navigate the storms and complete the round.

Unfortunately the rains continued throughout the evening and Sunday morning, making most of the course unplayable and forcing the decision to cancel the second round. Both Girls divisions of U19 and U15, however, had ties for the lead between two players after round one and needed to be decided in a play-off on Sunday.  Luckily the first two holes were high and dry enough to play, so four girls went out in extremely tough conditions to determine the winners.

Both the weather and a larger than normal gallery with most of the field heading out to watch the exciting playoff would test the nerves of all involved.  On the first hole, Tatiana Hulan, 17, of London, ON, would chip in for par forcing Megan Schauer, 17, of Lasalle, ON, to show great poise and make a difficult eight footer for her par to force a second playoff hole.  Hulan would bogey the second hole while Schauer made another par to come away with the MJT Girls U19 title.

In the younger Girls division, 14-year-old Windsor locals Shannon Coffey and Jasmine Ly both made two-putt pars to force a second play-off hole where Ly made a bogey but Coffey struggled on the green and ended with a double-bogey to allow Ly to take the title.

In the MJT Peewee Boys division, Shawn Sehra, 11, of Windsor, continues to make a strong case to be considered one of the best Peewee golfers in Canada by shooting the lowest score in the tournament for all competitors - an even par 72.

In the MJT Bantam Boys division, David Nunes, 14, of Tecumseh, ON, captured the title with a 73, beating out his twin brother by four strokes and also winning his division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive prize.

It was a great day for GAO regional team Essex-Kent as in addition to team members Sehra, Ly, Coffey and Nunes placing top in their divisions, there was a Team Essex-Kent clean sweep of podium in the MJT Juvenile Boys division, where Curtis Hughes, 15, of Lakeshore, ON, placed first with 75, Marcus Slipchuk, 16, of Amherstburg, ON, came second (78) and Ethan Stewart, 16, of Windsor (79) took third.

The MJT Junior Boys division was captured by Riley Conners, 18, of Listowel, ON, who shot 75 for a two-stroke victory over Nicholas Mihalo, 17, of Windsor.

The other divisional Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition winners were Hulan, Sehra, Owen Coughlin of Amherstburg and Bryce Hughes of Tecumseh.

The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in the province is the MJT Humber Institute Professional Golf Management Classic at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington on June 20th and 21st, a double qualifier for MJT Team Canada to Australia and the North American Junior Amateur in Phoenix, AZ.
