Truman Tai ends MJT career on a high with 8-under victory at Osprey Valley

Alton, ON – (August 19, 2013) – The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) players were welcomed to the MJT Collegiate Bound Series at Osprey Valley Golf Club in Alton, ON, this past weekend, where a solid field of junior golfers competed for titles in three divisions as well as an exemption into the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) Notre Dame University in Indiana this October.  “Two perfect days, you could not ask for anything better,” said MJT Tournament Director and PGA of Canada Professional, Dave Smallwood. “The course was in fantastic shape and the facility is outstanding.”

For over seven years, Truman Tai, 19, of Markham, ON, has competed on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour and racked up multiple victories, so it was fitting that he ended his junior career on a high, firing back to back 68’s to win Low Overall and the MJT Junior Boys 17-19 gold medal, together with the qualifying position in the FCWT Notre Dame University event later this year. “I putted great both days and made very few mistakes,” said Tai of his eight-under-par total score of 136.  “It feels good to win on the MJT.  The MJT always hosts such great tournaments and it’s great to play against such good juniors.”  Finishing in a tie for second in the division at 146 total score was David French, 18, of Sarnia, ON, who carded 74-72 and Rhys Davies, 19, of Waterloo, ON, shot 73-73.

Riley Spear, 16, of Acton, ON, fired two solid rounds of 77-72 (149) to win the MJT Juvenile Boys 15-16 division.  “It is my first win and I am very excited,” said Spear. “I have played with Jack (Quirke) before and knew that he would be tough to beat.”  Finishing in a tie for second place at 150 two day total was Paul Edgar, 16, of Kitchener, ON, who was 75-75, and Gray Potter, 15, of Glen Williams, ON, who also shot 75-75.

14-year old Jordy Denomme of Waterloo, ON, shot 74-75 (149) to claim the MJT Bantam Boys 14 and under gold medal with a very solid tournament.  “It feels pretty good to win,” said Denomme. “The course was in awesome shape, this is a huge relief to win.” Finishing second was Max Redman, 14, of Cambridge, ON, who shot 78-73 (151) followed by Mackenzie Crawford, 14, of Utopia, ON, (77, 75=152).

Divisional winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jordy Denomme, Jack Quirke of Waterloo, and Riley Gross of Toronto, ON. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Max Redman, Jared Kuthe of Mississauga, ON, and Daniel Knapp of Burlington, ON. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Connor Munro of Etobicoke, ON, Mitchell Hardy of Kitchener, ON, and Nicholas Lam of Markham, ON.
