4-UNDER PAR VICTORY FOR MJT-BC PGA JUNIOR CHAMPION
Lee qualifies for China Junior Open

CLOVERDALE, BC – A major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), endorsed by the Professional Golfers’ Association of British Columbia (PGA of BC), played out Tuesday through Thursday, July 31st to August 2nd, on Northview Golf Course in Cloverdale, BC. The 54-hole tournament, the MJT-PGA of BC Junior Championship, was presented by Odlum Brown Limited, and is part of a series of national events pioneered by the MJT in conjunction with the provincial CPGA zones. A full field of 100 junior golfers from Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Washington, Mexico and all over British Columbia took part, with a cut to the top 60 players after 36 holes.

Mayfair Lakes Golf Club junior, Dong Su, 17, of Richmond, BC, repeated as overall champion after a wire-to-wire victory with rounds of 70-72-70 (212), also claiming the MJT-PGA of BC Junior Boys 17 and up title with this four-under-par total. Six strokes back in this division was Han Baek, 18, of Maple Ridge and Swan-e-set Bay Resort, BC, who shot 73-72-73 (218). There was a three-way tie for third place at 219 total score between David Lee, 17, of Vancouver and McCleery Golf Club (74-73-72), Cameron Harris, 17, of Maple Ridge and Swan-e-set Bay Resort (73-75-72), and Ted Cho, 18, of Langley, BC (75-70-74), a Redwoods Golf Club junior.

A brilliant 68 on day one on the Canal course catapulted 12-year-old Kevin Lee of Redwoods Golf Club and Surrey, BC, to the top of the Boys 13 and under division and set him up for ultimate victory after he closed with rounds of 71-75 for a 214 total score. Having the second lowest score overall, Lee qualifies once again for the 2008 China Junior Open as players have to be aged 17 and under and Dong Su turns 18 in December. Lee will defend his Boys 11-14 China Junior Open title, which he won last February when sent by the MJT.

Runner-up to Lee among Boys 13 and under was Kevin Kwon, 12, of Swan-e-set Bay Resort and Coquitlam, BC, who fired rounds of 76-71-70 (217) to finish just three strokes back. Third place went to Mayfair Lakes junior Mason Pimentel, 13, of Richmond, BC, who shot 74-73-76 (223).

The MJT-PGA of BC Junior Boys 14-16 Champion was Seymour Golf Club’s Matthew Hamilton, 15, of West Vancouver, BC, who is enjoying a stellar year on the MJT with one second place finish and two wins to his credit. Hamilton’s consistent golf (74-74-75=223) managed to edge out runner-up Bryan Lichimo, 15, of Capilano Golf Club and North Vancouver, BC, who shot 76-73-75 (224). There was a tie for third place in the division at 226 total score between Justin Hyun, 15, of Meadow Gardens Golf Club and Burnaby, BC (77-76-73), and Brian Jung, 14, of Maple Ridge and Swan-e-set Bay Resort (74-79-73).

Quilchena Golf Club’s nominee, Stephanie Wong, 13, of Richmond, was crowned MJT-PGA of BC Junior Girls Champion after firing 80-78-77 for a 235 total, beating runner-up Porsche Campbell, 14, by two. “My driving was good, I made birdies which helped, and the competition made me more competitive and made me try even harder,” said Wong. “The highlights were on the last round I made three birdies on 10, 12, and 16, and also I shot 77 on a course that I've never played before.” Campbell, a Marine Drive Golf Club junior, scored her best finish on the MJT to date with scores of 83-78-76 (237). There was a tie for third place at 239 total score between Jaehee Choi, 13, of Surrey (81-80-78), and Sylvia Park, 14, of Vancouver 976-80-83).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Kevin Lee, Steven Nakajima, 16, of Delta, BC, Nelson Yang, 17, of Coquitlam, and Krista Fenniak, 15, of Fort McMurray, AB. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Devon Swallow, 13, of Westbank, BC, Alex Petan, 15, of North Delta, BC, Tyron Deguise, 17, of Westbank, and Porsche Campbell.
