JUNIORS BATTLE BLAZING HEAT IN MJT WEBBER NATURALS STOP

VERNON, BC – Junior golfers from Manitoba, Alberta and all over British Columbia had to contend with stifling heat and a difficult course in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Webber Naturals Series at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon this past Monday and Tuesday, July 24th and 25th. Over 400 bottles of water were consumed while the players managed treacherous greens and long walks on the beautiful course.

On day two, Sam Hunt, 16, of Penticton, BC, and Penticton Golf Club, gained great ground over his competitors in the Boys 14-16 division by firing a 71 for a 146 total score, taking the winner’s trophy by nine strokes. “Chris Lee and Kyle Dodman had me worried the most but I tried to not think ahead and trust my swing and putt reads,” said Hunt, who cited his three straight birdies on the front nine in his first round as the highlight for him. Lee, 16, of Calgary, AB, and Bearspaw Country Club, shot 75-80 and ended up tied for second place in the division at 155 total score with Tyron DeGuise, 16, of Westbank, BC, (77-78). Zack Duan, 14, of Vancouver, BC, placed fourth (77-79=156) while Dodman, 16, of Abbotsford, BC, placed fifth after scoring 77-81 (158).

Maple Leaf Team Canada to Scotland member, Andrew Funk, 17, of Edmonton, AB, fired 74-71 (145) to win the Boys 17 and up division by three strokes over Maple Leaf Team Canada to Mexico member, Mitchell Lock, 18, of Mission, BC. Lock, a junior at Mission Golf Club, shot 72-76 to close with a 148 total over the two days. There was a tie for third place in the division at 149 total score between Morgan Decksheimer, 17, of Westbank, BC (76-73), and Nicholas Gagne, 19, of Richmond, BC (71-78).

In the Boys 13 and under division, Kieran Standen, 12, of Edmonton, AB, and Derrick Country Club, claimed victory after posting scores of 79-87 (166) for a two stroke lead over Harrison Clegg, 13, of Langley, BC (85-83=168). “All I was thinking coming down the stretch was ‘don’t put it in the water!’” said Standen, who only became concerned about his lead when he took a nine on the last hole. Third place in the division went to Jon Strasdin, 13, of Prince George, BC, who shot 91-80 for a 171 total score.

Another Penticton Golf Club junior, Muriel McIntyre, 17, of Penticton, BC, fired 84-85 (169) to run away with the Girls division title. “Driving the green on the 6th hole on the RedTail course was a highlight for me,” she said. “I was just out there to play well and have fun.” Kayla Ketcheson, 15, of St. Andrews, MB, came second among the girls (85-99), and Ashley Fredette, 15, of Winnipeg, MB, placed third (107-101).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Sean Moen, 13, of North Vancouver, BC, Kyle Dodman, Cole Roblin, 19, of Kelowna, and Breanne Fredette, 12, of Winnipeg, MB.
The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Sean Moen again, Michael Lawrence, 16, of Richmond, BC, Brock Pennie, 17, of Langley, BC, and Ashley Fredette.
