Maple Leaf Tour Qualifies Young Golfers for Junior World Championships

RICHMOND, B.C. ? Over 90 competitive junior golfers were on hand to showcase their talents despite less than ideal weather conditions this past weekend at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) stop at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course in Richmond, BC.

The two-day tournament was also a qualifier for 13 and 14 year olds on the nationwide junior tour for the 38th annual Callaway Golf Junior World Championships in San Diego, California, July 12-15, 2005.

Exemptions were won by Sue Kim, 14, from Langley and Jonnie Motomochi, 14, from White Rock.

Sue Kim, who held off a hard charge from South Surrey?s Ahnna Kim, 14, clinched the Girls division title and the Junior World Championship exemption by one stroke with her rounds of 74-77 for a 151 total score. ?I only knew I had won after the final hole when Ahnna?s ball went into the hazard,? said Kim. ?It will be exciting, interesting, to go to the Junior World Championships ? I want to aim for scores in the 70?s.?

Ahnna Kim had to settle for second place with scores of 79-73 (152) while her sister, Nari Kim, 16, shot 82-74 (156) and tied for third with Pamela Burneski, 13, of Surrey (79-77=156).

Two veteran MJT players, Motomochi and Dong Su, 15, from Richmond, fought a close battle in the Boys 14-16 division. Both entered the final round tied for the lead at two-under-par, and finished neck-in-neck in the pouring rain with rounds of 77 for total scores of 146. ?I am so happy we are not playing a play off,? said Su, referencing the wet weather and poor visibility on his home course.

Motomochi, also a veteran at the Junior World Championships, is a highly talented player who is bound to perform well in California this July.

Not even a hole-in-one on the 8th hole at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course by 13-year-old Tom Xue of Richmond could stop Brian Cho?s winning streak in the Boys 13 and under division. Cho, 12, of Pitt Meadows, captured his third MJT division title this season with his scores of 77-74 (151). Xue shot 79-74 (153) for second place.

Third place in the division was claimed by James Fahy, 12, of Vancouver with his scores of 80-78 (158) and fourth spot went to Reid Martin, 13, of Mukilteo, WA, who shot 79-80 (159).

Brendan Peters, 17, of Maple Ridge, won the Boys 17 and up division with great rounds of 72-71 for a total of 143. ?The course was in good condition, nice greens,? said Peters. ?My driver was key to my winning. It feels good (to win).?

Two strokes back with rounds of 73-72 (145) was Devin Carrey, 17, of South Surrey. Carrey placed second in the division ahead of Seon Kim, 17, of Surrey and Kevin Walz, 17, of Qualicum Beach, who tied for third with total scores of 146.

Division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive competition were Kevin Lawrence, 13, of Richmond; Riley Wheeldon, 14, of Comox; IL-Jun Chun, 16, of Vancouver; and Lindsay Manion, 16, of Surrey.

Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition division winners were Lindsay Manion, Brian Lichimo, 13, of North Vancouver, Ted Cho, 16, of Surrey, and Kevin Walz.

The next Maple Leaf Tour event is the MJT Lindsay Kenney Classic at The Redwoods Golf Course in Langley, April 23-24, a qualifier for the 53rd International Junior Masters in New York, USA.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its 7th season, is presented by Boston Pizza and is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.
