Taylor low overall at MJT’s 1st Choice Savings Series presented by Lethbridge College

For Immediate Release – Lethbridge, AB – (May 2, 2011) –
Junior golfers from Saskatchewan and all over Alberta, some travelling for longer than 12 hours, gathered in Lethbridge, Alberta, this past weekend for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT 1st Choice Savings Series presented by Lethbridge College at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort. The players braved stormy and mixed conditions on day one, followed by spring weather on day two to define the start of the golf season in the province.

A full field in each age division saw Mitch Taylor, 19, of Calgary, AB, shooting rounds of 75-69 (144) as the overall low finisher. Taylor’s second day 69 was the low round of the tournament, earning him a two shot victory over 18 year old Andrew Ritchot of Lethbridge (72-74=146) in the Boys 17-19 division. This was Taylor’s first win on the MJT, which was exciting for the 1st Choice Savings tournament’s presenting sponsor, Lethbridge College, as Taylor has committed to play there next year while attending their Professional Golf Management Program. Finishing in third place for the division was 17 year old Riley Fleming of Airdrie, AB, who carded rounds of 76-71 (147).

In the Boys 14-16 division, champion Nick Scrymgeour, 15, of Cochrane, AB, shot four-under-par on the front nine to bolt into the lead as he and Matt Williams, 15, of Calgary, went back and forth on the back nine. “I birdied six through nine on the front to really get into it, this is a great way to kick start the year,” stated Scrymgeour, who won with 75-70 (145), good enough to edge out William’s 72-74=146 by one stroke and also earn an exemption into a PGA Junior Series event in the U.S.A. Third place finisher, Patrick Murphy, 14, of Crossfield, AB, shot 77-72 (149). Scrymgeour commented, “We had a great time as Patrick and Matt are good friends, it kept me calm. The golf course was awesome, the pairings were awesome, it was perfect!”

Eleven year old Brendan Brown, of Calgary, was in fine form again this week, capturing his second straight MJT Boys 13 and Under title, and commenting, “I hit the driver well all weekend, which you need to do around here. This is a very fun tour with really good kids, so it was good to be out here. I am proud of myself so far, I know that I can do it.” Brown’s consistent golf of 79-82 (161) gave him a five shot lead over his next closest competitors who tied for second place at 166 total score. These players included Alex Bisilis, 13, also from Calgary, (91-75), whose 16 shot improvement won him a Golf Town Comeback Award, Corey Bailey, 13, of Shaunavon, SK, (88-78), and Carter Cissell, 13, of Crossfield (86-80).

In the Girls Division, Calgary’s Sydney MacDonald’s back to back 75’s gave her an eight shot victory over Kat Kennedy, 16, of Okotoks, AB. MacDonald, 17, said of her consistent play that she was very proud and that “two 75’s are a great start to the year, especially under yesterday’s conditions.” She continued, “I just wanted to thank the MJT for what they do, you guys do a great job and it is so much fun to play out here.” The third place finisher was 15 year old Sabrine Garrison of Calgary, who shot 86-76 (162).

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition divisional winners were Landon Stellingwerff of Calgary, Joel Douglas of High River, AB, Brett Hogan of Calgary and Sydney MacDonald, while Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin competition divisional winners were Eric Chantler of Fort McMurray, AB, Jon Fry of Calgary, Mitch Taylor and Kat Kennedy. Alex Basilis, Cory Audette of Swift Current, SK, Joel Hasselman of Pincher Creek, AB and Sabrine Garrison all took home Golf Town Comeback Awards.
