11-UNDER PAR VICTORY FOR MJT-BC PGA JUNIOR CHAMPION

CLOVERDALE, BC – A major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), endorsed by the British Columbia Professional Golfers’ Association (BC PGA), played out Tuesday through Thursday, August 1st to 3rd, on Northview Golf Course in Cloverdale, BC. The 54-hole tournament, the MJT-BC PGA Junior Championship, is part of a series of national events pioneered by the MJT in conjunction with the provincial CPGA zones. A full field of 120 junior golfers from the USA and all over British Columbia took part, with a cut to 60 players after 36 holes.

On day one, a course record was achieved by Dong Su, 16, of Richmond, BC, and Mayfair Lakes Golf Club, who blistered the Canal course with a 9-under-par 63. This incredible score by the longtime MJT member, who has also competed in European Tour events, set him up for ultimate victory both overall and in the Boys 14-16 division, after he closed with 70, 72 for a 205 total score. "The first round, I just tried to two putt on the 18th hole, from off the green to shoot 64, but I made the eagle putt from that far," he said. "This is the first event that I played this summer in Canada - mostly I play lots of tournaments in U.S. – and I feel really happy about winning. I was not going to be mad if I lost because this is one of the major events for the MJT and I have some big events coming up this summer, so winning this title can help me to play well in the rest of my tournaments.”

Runner-up to Su was Bryan Lichimo, 14, of North Vancouver and Seymour Creek Golf Club, who fired 71-71-76 (219). Two Americans rounded out the top four players in the division: Matt Rawitzer, 15, of Bellingham, WA, shot 69-77-73 (219) to place third, while Jacob Webb, 16, of Issaquah, WA, shot 69-75-76 (220) to come fourth.

The MJT BC-PGA Junior Boys 17 and up champion was Bill Hole, 17, of Vancouver, BC, and Point Grey Golf Club. Hole fired excellent rounds of 68-72-72 for a 212 total score, beating runner-up Jessie Singh, 18, of Surrey, by three strokes. “Coming down the stretch I knew I had the lead and just didn’t want to give any strokes back to the field,” said Hole. “I was worried about Jessie Singh because I knew he was playing well. My tournament highlight was when I chipped in for eagle on the par four 8th when there were a couple of people trailing me by one shot. It feels good to play solid golf and be rewarded for it.”

Singh shot 72-72-71 (215). Cole Roblin, 19, from Kelowna, BC, finished in third place in the division with scores of 74-69-73 (216) and Ted Cho, 17, of Surrey, placed fourth (74-71-72=217).

12-year-old Adam Svensson of Surrey and Marine Drive Golf Club blitzed his division with fine scores of 70-69-74 (213) to be crowned MJT BC-PGA Junior Boys 13 and under champion in style. Runner-up was Kevin Lee, 11, also of Surrey and Eaglequest Golf Club, who shot 76-73-74 (223). Third place in the division went to Chris Lee, 13, of Coquitlam, BC, (71-77-78=226) and fourth spot was claimed by Jon Strasdin, 13, of Prince George, BC, who shot 75-76-78 (229).

The MJT BC-PGA Junior Girls champion was 12-year-old Jennifer Yang, of Coquitlam and Meadow Gardens Golf Club, who continues to dominate the division with her great play, shooting 72-76-71 for a 219 total score over the three days. Runner-up was Anica Heera Yoo, 12, of Port Coquitlam, BC, who shot 78-74-82 (234). Third place went to Kim Soo Bin, 13, also of Port Coquitlam.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Andy Yang, 13, of Coquitlam, Jacob Webb, Cole Roblin and Hayley Geremia, 17, of Port Moody. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Kevin Lee, Kyle Dodman, 16, of Abbotsford, BC, Tyler Thorau, 17, of Victoria, BC, and Soo Bin Kim.
