NSW, Australia (October 6, 2019) - For the 12th consecutive year, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour sent a Canadian contingent to compete in Australia, to gain international exposure and experience in the Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) International Junior Classic at Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club, Hunter Valley, NSW.

Cited as one of the largest junior golf events in the Southern Hemisphere, this tournament featured over 200 competitors from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and the United States, and was contested over four days between October 1 to 4 with both team and individual competition formats.

Out of the 148 boys who teed it up in the Individual Boys Championship, low Canadian honours at the event went to Alberta’s Tommy McKenzie, of Calgary, who carded rounds of 79, 75, 70, and 79 (303) for a solo 37th place finish. His Canadian teammates Kyle Mayner, of Kelowna, BC, and Danny Im, of Langley, BC, finished with rounds of 80, 75, 79, and 73 (307) and 80, 80, 78, and 84 (322) respectively. Winning the Individual Boys Championship was Jack Buchanan, of South Australia. Buchanan fired an impressive four-day score of 72, 66, 70, 72 for an eight-under, 280 total.

In the 60-strong Girls division, Cassie Porter, from Queensland, Australia, ran away with the title carding a four-day total score of 277 (64, 70, 71, and 72). Canada’s Alessandra Nagayo, of Toronto, ON, led the way for MJT Team Canada, finishing tied for 26th after recording rounds of 78, 81, 80, and 75 (314), while compatriot, Morgan Rutledge, of Melancthon, ON, finished with scores of 95, 92, 85, and 92 (364).

The tournament hosts, Jack Newton Junior Golf, came first out of the 14 in the tournament with a final score of one-under, 575 (143, 141, 144, 147). MJT Team Canada finished one stroke back of Japan in eighth place, with a final score of 617 (157, 156, 150, 154).

“This was the experience of a lifetime for us all,” said MJT Team Canada Coach John Deneer, PGA Professional. “I was privileged to chaperone this group of impressive young people across the seas and feel I can speak for them about what a great time was had by all.” Team uniforms and golf bags were provided courtesy of generous support from MJT’s Official International Travel Partner, TuGo. TuGo also supports MJT programs via a partnership where MJT receives a contribution from every travel insurance policy sold.
