Team Australia leads after Day 1 of MJT National Team Challenge presented by Freedom 55 Financial

Niagara on the Lake, ON – (September 20, 2019) – Day one of the MJT National Team Challenge presented by Freedom 55 Financial is complete and it was teams from outside of Canada who came out strong. The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour has played host to this tournament for five years in the Niagara Region bringing together 15 teams and 90 competitors from across Canada and the United States with Mexico and Australia making their inaugural appearance in 2019. The participants compete in both team competition format and individual medal stroke play over three rounds.

Arriving ready to play from across the Pacific was Team Australia who carded a team score of 298 to hold a three-shot lead after the first day of play. Leading the way for Team Australia are 16-year-old, Annika Rathbone, who fired a 71 to lead the junior girls division individually, and 15-year-old, Jeffrey Yu Guan who recorded an even-par, 72. Guan also sits in second place individually in the Junior Boys division just two shots back of the lead. Also contributing to Team Australia’s first-round score are 17-year-old, Joshuaa Robards (76) and 17-year-old, Taylah Elelms (79).

Sitting in second place after the first round with a score of 301 is the Sean Foley Performance team led by 16-year-old, Kiko Coelho. The Lake Mary, Florida-teen, also leads the individual junior boys division with an opening round of 70. Complimenting Coelho’s round was fellow Lake Mary-player, Cyrus Lee, 17, who fired a 72. Rounding out the counting score for the Sean Foley Performance team score are 17-year-old, Minjae Park (79) and 16-year-old, Iris Wang (80). Wang currently sits in fifth place individually in the Junior Girls division.

Also sitting tied for second place with a score of 301 is GenNXT Golf Academy led by coaches Henry Brunton and Kieran Harris, who are also MJT Tournament Directors in Ontario. Contributing players in the first round were 18-year-old, Yaroslav Ilyenko (74), 17-year-old, Daniel Talmage (74), 16-year-old, Ethan Gillis (76), and 16-year-old, Kiefer Bulau (77).

On the individual side, the low Canadian player after the first round was 16-year-old, Graem Costigan, of Cambridge, ON, who recorded a 73. 15-year-old, Rozlyn Rooke, of Milton, ON, leads the Canadian players in the Junior Girls division after carding a 77 for Rattlesnake Point Academy. Rooke sits in second place individually. Also notable in the field is 15-year-old, Autumn Neiszner, of Regina, SK, who sits in third after firing a 78 competing for MJT Team Central.

Of the three regional teams representing the MJT, Team East leads the way sitting in sixth place on the leaderboard with a team score of 312. MJT Team Central carded a 322 and MJT Team West fired a 337.
