GAYTON CLAIMS MJT ATLANTIC JUNIOR CLASSIC

Gayton Claims MJT Atlantic Junior Classic

Shubenacadie, NS: The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) inaugural Atlantic Junior Classic successfully concluded yesterday at the Links at Penn Hills Golf Club in Shubenacadie, NS, where junior golfers played 36 holes of stroke play competition in four divisions.

Tanner Gayton, 16, of Shubenacadie, claimed the low overall score for the field on his home course as well as the Boys 14-16 division title with rounds of 73-84 for a 157 total. Gayton receives a special exemption into the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship at the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Club in Banff, Alberta, September 10-11, which is by invitation only.

Runner-up in his division was Jordan Dill, 16, also of Shubenacadie, who scored 75-88 for a 163 total. Third place went to Brian Affleck, 16, of Sutherlands River (80-84=164).

In the Boys 13 and under division, 13-year-old Alex Fleming of Colchester County fired 82-81 to beat runner-up Dong Ko, 13, of Halifax, by three strokes. Ko shot back-to-back rounds of 83 for a 166 total score. Third place went to young Riley Griffen, 11, of Stewiacke, who shot 101-100.

The Boys 17 and up division was won by Andrew MacPherson, 18, of Shubenacadie, with scores of 83-82 (165). Michael Crozier, 17, of Bedford placed second (80-87=167) and Jason Garagan, 18, of Oromocto, NB, finished third (90-92=182).

12-year-old Irene Jung of Bedford posted scores of 87-92 (179) in the Girls division.

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Fleming, Affleck and Crozier. The Sundog Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners were Giffen, Affleck and Garagan.

The MJT Atlantic Junior Classic was part of the series of tournaments held across Canada by the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT). The MJT, which is presented by Boston Pizza, is now in its 7th season and is Canada’s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.
