SKELTON GOES LOW OVERALL AT MJT BIEBER SECURITIES CLASSIC

WINNIPEG, MB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s third annual Bieber Securities Classic concluded this past Monday at Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg where 17-year-old Jesse Skelton of St. Francois-Xavier took the low overall honours in the two-day tournament.

In a two-man showdown with Cole Roblin, 18, of Winnipeg, on the final day, Skelton came out victorious with scores of 70-77 (147) to win the Boys 17 and up division title.

“The highlight of the event for me was making seven birdies on day one,” said Skelton, whose goal is to become the top amateur in Canada. “This win definitely helps me in terms of confidence.”

Roblin finished three strokes back with scores of 69-81 (150). Third place in the division was a tie between Sean Robertson, 18, of Winnipeg (81-70=151) and Curtis Nichol, 17, of Killarney (77-74=151).

Tournament Sponsor of the event, the fourth MJT stop in Manitoba this season, was local firm Bieber Securities.

More great golf was played in the Boys 13 and under division where Steve Minion, 13, of Winnipeg, shot 75-73 for a winning 148 total score.

“The highlight for me was when my bunker shot on the 8th hole almost went in for eagle,” said Minion, who added that playing on the MJT helps him deal with pressure.

Runner-up Evan Cowan, 13, of Coaldale, Alberta, shot 75-82 (157) while third place in the division was claimed by Taylor Reilly, 13, of Winnipeg (78-83=161).

Boys 14-16 champion was Peter Moon, 15, of Winnipeg, who fired a 74 to come back and win his division title by one stroke with a 153 total score.

A three-way tie for second place went to Cornel Smith, 16, of Regina, Saskatchewan (76-78=154), Derek East, 15, of Winnipeg (77-77=154) and Lyle MacKenzie, 15, of Winnipeg (75-79=154)

Much enjoyment was had in the Girls division with Danielle McGurry, 15, of Winnipeg, sticking her tee shot on hole 14 to six inches from the pin and going on to win with scores of 96-104 (200). “My future goal in golf is just to play as well as possible and hopefully play some college/university golf,” said McGurry. “This win helps motivate me to do even better.”

11-year-old Jenna Roadley of Winnipeg came second and 14-year-old Ashley Fredette of Winnipeg finished third.

McGurry also won the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions in her division. Other division winners were Christy O’Donnell of Winnipeg, Tristan Schneider of La Salle and Curtis Nichol for the Long Drive, and Evan Cowan, Aaron Hemminger of Selkirk, and Matt Gray of Winnipeg for the Closest-to-the-Pin.

Some of the country’s top juniors have taken part in the MJT, such as Inah Park, the reigning Canadian junior girls’ champion, and Darren Wallace, the Canadian Men’s Amateur Champion. Seven out of the Top 10 RCGA nationally-ranked juniors in 2004 have played on the Tour, which is presented by Boston Pizza nationally and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.

The invitation-only MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship wraps the regular season on September 10-11 at Banff Springs Golf Club in Banff, Alberta. For more information please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit the Tour’s website at www.maplejt.com.
