GLIGIC CROWNED MJT-ONTARIO PGA JUNIOR CHAMPION AT ANGUS GLEN

Gligic Crowned MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Champion at Angus Glen

Markham, ON ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held the third annual Ontario PGA Junior Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham this past weekend, where the weather conditions for the junior golfers were generally hot and humid.

The low score in the two day event was in the Boys 14-16 division, where Michael Gligic, 15, of Burlington, posted a 69 in his opening round to have a second day lead which could not be usurped. Braeden Cryderman, 15, of Huntsville, made a hard charge to close with a 73 on day two, but could not catch Gligic, who shot 148 total for the low overall score and division champion?s trophy.

?It feels good to play well at a course where all the greatest players have played and shoot 69,79,? said Gligic, whose future goals include qualifying for the USGA and Canadian Amateur en route to obtaining a golf scholarship in the States. ?The MJT has helped my game as the competition is extremely high.?

Third place in the division went to Nick Beaudoin, 16, of Burlington who shot 80-78 for a 158 total score, and fourth place was claimed by Jonathan Copfer, 15, of Niagara Falls (83-77=160).

The Ontario PGA Junior Boys 17 and up Champion was Mark Bania, 18, of Kitchener, who closed out last year?s champion, Todd Hutcheson, 17, of Ingersoll.

?The highlight of this tournament for me was capturing the division title after a tough, close battle,? said Galt Country Club junior Bania, who shot 80-73 for a 153 total score. ?This Tour gives me the chance to compete with a high calibre field on high class courses and allows me to work on playing under pressure situations.?

Runner-up Hutcheson shot 86-70 (156). Ben Howes, 18, of Kitchener, placed third in the division with scores of 82-76 (158) and Mike Mottola, 18, of Niagara Falls came fourth (82-78=160).

Brent McKenzie, 13, of Galt Country Club in Cambridge, was crowned the Ontario PGA Junior Boys 13 and under Champion after edging Barrett McCarthy, 13, of Oakville by two strokes. ?This course is such a great track and to play this well here feels awesome,? said McKenzie, who posted rounds of 80-78 after almost sinking his tee shot on the sixth hole with a nine iron.

In third and fourth place respectively were Gajan Sivabalasingham, 11, of Markham (87-77) and Neil Khosla, 13, of Mississauga (84-82).

Justice Durland, 14, of Oakville took the Girls division trophy after posting two rounds of 91-86 for a 177 total, beating Kathryn Corbiere, 15, of Manitoulin Island. ?It was great to play the amazing course, for tournament experience and to meet new people,? said Durland, who plays out of Shelburne Golf Club.

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were McKenzie, Copfer and Hutcheson. The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were McKenzie, Mike Young of Oakville, Chris Wilcock of Kitchener and Justice Durland.

The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its seventh season, is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions.
