BRITISH COLUMBIA JUNIORS JOIN MAPLE LEAF TEAM TO SCOTLAND

Vancouver, B.C. ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held a qualifier in British Columbia for the Maple Leaf Team to Scotland this past weekend, at the Links at Boundary Bay Golf Course in Delta, B.C.

The competitive field in the two-day tournament, which was sponsored by Cattermole Timber, enjoyed a well conditioned golf course but faced challenging winds off the ocean at Boundary Bay. The event was to qualify two players to join the Canadian contingent in the Kingdom of Fife Team Matches in Scotland, August 22-26, 2005.

12-year-old standout Brian Cho of Pitt Meadows captured one of the team spots to Scotland, the Boys 13 and under division title and overall low score for the tournament with rounds of 70-71 (141). ?I am proud of myself that I shot three under par after two rounds,? said Cho. ?It was my short game and putting; I played as safe as I can.?

Reid Martin, 13, of Washington State, placed second to Cho in the division with scores of 73-76 (149), while Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey, came in third with rounds of 77-76 (153). Fourth spot went to Matthew Hamilton, 13, of West Vancouver (76-84=160).

Cho will form part of the eight member Maple Leaf Team to Scotland, together with 17-year-old Devin Carrey of South Surrey, who posted scores of 72-71 (143) and won the Boys 17 and up division and second low overall score. The rest of the team is qualifying at other MJT tournaments across the country.

?I knew I had to finish the last couple of holes to win because I didn?t know how the others were playing ? I just concentrated at keeping (the ball) in play and giving myself a chance for birdie,? said Carrey. ?I am excited to be able to make the Team to Scotland this summer.?

Three strokes back of Carrey in his division was Hansol Koh, 21, of New Westminster, who shot 70-76 (146). Third place was claimed by Seon Kim, 17, of Surrey (74-76=150) followed by Mingu Kang, 18, of Richmond in fourth place (76-75=151).

The MJT Cattermole Timber Classic Boys 14-16 division title was won by Mitchell Maier, 16, of Langley, with rounds of 75-76 for a 151 total score. ?I just had some breaks go my way,? said Maier.

Runner-up in this division was Bill Hole, 16, of Vancouver, who shot 76-77 (153), edging third place finisher Kyle Dodman, 14, of Abbotsford, who shot back-to-back rounds of 77. Fourth spot was claimed by Brent Smith, 16, of Maple Ridge (76-81=157).

14-year-old Pamela Burneski of Surrey crowned her great progress on the MJT this season where she has posted fifth, third and second place finishes, with the MJT Cattermole Timber Classic Girls division title. Burneski posted consistent rounds of 76-76 (152) to beat runner-up Sue Kim, 14, of Langley, by five strokes.

?I feel happy about this, I didn?t even know what I was shooting,? said Burneski. ?My strategy was to stay out of trouble.? Both Burneski and Kim previously qualified through the MJT for the 37th Junior World Championships in San Diego this July.

Third place in the Girls division went to Stephanie Corey, 15, of Seattle, WA, who shot 74-85 (159), while Chelsea Kim, 15, of Port Coquitlam, placed fourth (79-88=167).

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Stephanie Corey, Brian Cho, Seon Kim and Michael Corboy, 16, of Langley.

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Patrick McEachran, 12, of Squamish, Andrew Kirkwood, 16, of Delta, Mark Roman, 19, of North Vancouver, and Chelsea Kim.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its 7th season, is presented by Boston Pizza and is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. The next local tournament is the MJT Fraser Valley Championship at Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford, May 28-29.
