Canada's #1 Junior Golf Tour

 

On July 22, Canada's #1 junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), brought its Mini Tour to Poppy Estate Golf Course in Langley for the first time, where a talented field of golfers aged 12 and under from British Columbia and beyond battled soaring summer temperatures at the picturesque venue. 

Impressive performances were turned in by the young players, who were competing in six divisions for titles, custom medals, adidas outerwear, and qualifying spots into the MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs later this fall. 

After finishing tied at 74 with Charlie Morgan (11) of Dawson Creek, BC, 11-year-old Lucas Huang of Vancouver, BC, was declared the MJT Boys 11-12 division winner based on countback, thanks to a stronger back-nine performance. Huang credited his putting for keeping big numbers off the card, saying, “My putting saved me from a lot of doubles,” while adding that his strategy throughout the round was simple: “Just go for it.”

 

White Rock's Stella Sun, 11, fired an impressive 70 to top the MJT Girls 11-12 division. Sun pointed to her putting as the key to her success, noting, “I made lots of putts,” while her favourite moment of the day came after sticking an approach shot close and converting the birdie.

 

Ten-year-old Eric Wu of Richmond, BC, posted a winning score of 72 in the MJT Boys 9-10 division. Wu said his game plan was to “play safe,” and summed up the day with a smile, adding, “I liked this event.”

 

Richmond's Yoyo Zhang, 9, led the MJT Girls 9-10 field by two strokes with a strong round of 70. Zhang credited her long game for the victory, saying, “My driver and irons were very good during the round,” and gave the experience top marks afterward, calling the MJT “10/10.”

 

Seven-year-old Tristan Liu of Maple Ridge, BC, put together a remarkable performance in the MJT Boys 8U division, carding a five-under-par 61, with an incredible nine birdies on the day to finish three strokes clear of the field.

 

Anna Song, 8, of Vancouver, BC, finished atop the MJT Girls 8U division with a score of 74. Song highlighted her opening-hole birdie as the shot she'll remember most, saying, “I hit one shot onto the green and two-putted for birdie,” while also praising the event's ‘great sponsors and staff.’
