Seven-year-old Hou fires 4-under as final National qualifiers are decided in Burnaby

The road to the MJT Mini Tour Nationals made its final stop in British Columbia on August 17, as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) welcomed nearly 60 young golfers to Burnaby Mountain Golf Club for a packed day of competition.

The waitlisted field of athletes aged 12 and under battled across six divisions, with custom MJT medals, fantastic sponsor prizing, and the final qualifying spots of the 2026 season into the MJT Mini Tour Nationals later this month in Tsawwassen on the line.

Seven-year-old Mason Hou of Vancouver delivered a standout performance, firing a brilliant four-under 67 to win the MJT Boys 8U division. Hou filled his card with six birdies and an eagle, while keeping his game plan remarkably straightforward: “Try not to make big mistakes.” He credited his putting as the strongest part of his game.

Eleven-year-old Bruce Yang of Vancouver, BC, claimed the MJT Boys 11–12 title with a solid round of 78, leaning on accurate iron play throughout the day. “The strongest part of my game was my irons because I made most of my shots straight and close to the pin,” said Yang, who also thanked his mom and coach Lee for their support.

Burnaby’s Ashley Jung captured the MJT Girls 11–12 division after the 12-year-old posted a steady 79. Jung pointed to keeping her composure and maintaining a positive attitude as keys to her round, while singling out her birdie on the sixth hole as an important moment.

In the MJT Boys 9–10 division, 10-year-old Allen Kong of Vancouver took the title with a strong 74 that included three birdies. His approach was simple, ‘Hit the green’, but one of his best moments came while saving par, as Kong drained a remarkable 50-foot putt on the ninth hole.

Annabel Zhao, 10, of Richmond, BC, earned the MJT Girls 9–10 victory with a well-played 76. Zhao focused on staying resilient throughout the round, describing her mindset as, “Focus and believe in myself after bad shots,” and highlighted her birdie putt on the ninth as her standout shot of the day.

Eight-year-old Anna Song of Vancouver, BC, secured the MJT Girls 8U title with an 83, edging out the competition by a single stroke in a tightly contested division. Song credited ‘my aiming’ as an important part of her strategy and shared her appreciation for the ‘great staff and sponsors’ who helped make the event possible.

Top finisher scores and the list of players who have not already qualified are noted below. Full results, as well as winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin and Long Drive competitions, are posted on the MJT website here.

The next MJT Mini Tour event in the province is the MJT Mini Tour at Musqueam Golf Course in Vancouver on September 20. For more information, or to view the upcoming British Columbia MJT Mini Tour schedule, please visit www.maplejt.com.
