MJT returns to Prince Edward Island with strong turnout at Countryview Golf Club
Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), returned to Prince Edward Island for the second consecutive season, welcoming a field of 72 young golfers to scenic Countryview Golf Club in Fairview for a weekend of competition across both its Mini Tour and Junior Tour circuits.
The MJT Mini Tour, designed for athletes aged 12 and under, teed up the action on June 6, with competitors battling in five divisions for titles, medals, and qualifying spots into the MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs in British Columbia. The event ran alongside a two-day MJT Junior Tour tournament for athletes aged 19 and under, held June 6-7, showcasing the depth of junior golf talent in Atlantic Canada.
Results from the MJT Mini Tour at Countryview Golf Club are detailed below.
Eleven-year-old Beckett Carr of Kingston, PEI, carded an impressive 80 to capture the MJT Boys 11-12 division title on home soil at Countryview Golf Club. After his victory, Carr pointed to his father for helping him navigate the round, saying, " My dad’s caddying was a good support." He also praised the event experience, rating it ‘10/10’ and adding that ‘it was well organized.’
Twelve-year-old Sophie Landry of Dieppe, NB, came out to shoot a score of 97 in the MJT Girls 11-12 division, and credited her father, who served as her caddie throughout the round, for helping her. Reflecting on the tournament, she rated it ‘10/10’ and said it was an ‘awesome golf course with a great organizing team.’
Competing in the MJT Boys 9-10 division, 10-year-old Tristan Breault of Dieppe, NB, posted a winning score of 79. Breault thanked ‘my caddie, and my big brother’ for being instrumental to his success and shared the simple game plan that guided him throughout the day: "Play safe, smart, and stay calm. Putt close to the hole."
Nine-year-old Niyah Rafih of Wolfville, NS, claimed top honours in the MJT Girls 9-10 division after carding a 97. Rafih acknowledged her ‘dad and all of my friends and caddies’ for their support and encouragement. As the pressure built down the stretch, she kept herself focused with a simple reminder: "I got this and I will try my best."
In the MJT Boys 8U division, eight-year-old Landon Reynolds of Miscouche, PEI, earned the division title with a score of 102. Reynolds followed a straightforward strategy throughout his round, explaining that his focus was to ‘hit it straight and far.’ He also recognized his father for helping him along the way.
