MJT Mini Tour in Atlantic Canada sees young talent compete at KenWo Golf Club

Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), hosted another session for competitive young golfers on the East Coast this past weekend, at KenWo Golf Club in New Minas, Nova Scotia. A total of 83 young athletes teed it up to compete under beautiful sunny skies in two tiers – either in the one-day event on May 23 for 12U players on the MJT Mini Tour or in the two-day stop on May 23-24 for 19U athletes on the MJT Junior Tour. Results of the former are detailed below.

On the MJT Mini Tour, athletes competed for titles in six age divisions as well as for qualifying spots into the MJT Mini Tour Nationals at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course in British Columbia this August. The weekend showcased the depth of junior golf talent emerging in Atlantic Canada.

Competing in his first-ever MJT event, 11-year-old Alex Brown of Lower West River, NS, rose to the top of the MJT Boys 11-12 division with a winning score of 86. Brown embraced the challenge and atmosphere of the event, saying, “It felt good, it was my first MJT ever,” before adding that the tournament was ‘a great experience.’

The MJT Girls 11-12 title went to Sophie Landry, a 12-year-old from Dieppe, NB, who carded a score of 100 to secure the victory. Asked how it felt to win, Landry responded, “Good! Pretty good!” while also calling it a ‘great event overall.’

Nine-year-old Callum Burge of Amherst, NS, captured the MJT Boys 9-10 division after posting an 83. Burge was proud to test his game against fellow young competitors, sharing, “I’m honoured to win my division, and it feels good to compete against others my age.” When asked to rate the event, his answer was an emphatic ‘10/10 x 10.’

Playing close to home, Wolfville’s Niyah Rafih, age nine, claimed the MJT Girls 9-10 division title with a score of 100. Rafih described the feeling of winning as ‘very good’ and praised the tournament atmosphere and conditions, calling the weather ‘amazing off and on.’

In the MJT Boys 8U division, seven-year-old John Burke of East Dover, NS, earned the win with a round of 93. Burke credited his preparation and effort after the round, saying, “It feels very good, I’ve worked very hard.” He also applauded the setup at KenWo Golf Club, noting the ‘very very good course conditions’ and that the ‘weather was perfect.’

Bree Wang, an eight-year-old from Bedford, NS, topped the MJT Girls 8U division after firing a score of 104 to close out a strong performance in the Nova Scotia sunshine.

Top finisher scores and the list of qualified players are noted below. Full results as well as winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin competition are posted on the MJT website here.
