Strong field takes on MJT Mini Tour at Toronto's Scarlett Woods
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) Mini Tour teed it up under beautiful summer skies on June 29 at Scarlett Woods Golf Course in Toronto, ON, where over 50 talented young golfers aged 7 to 12 gathered for another exciting stop on Canada's most-played junior golf circuit.
Competing across five divisions, young athletes battled for division titles, custom medals, fabulous prizes, and qualifying spots into MJT Mini Tour Nationals at Tsawwassen Springs in British Columbia later this summer, showcasing both their skills and sportsmanship throughout the day.
North York's Isaac Min, 12, held off the field by a single stroke after carding 68 to claim the MJT Boys 11-12 title. A key practice session before the round helped lay the foundation for the victory. "My dad took me to practice right before. I grinded out my wood and driver," said Min. Protecting his lead required composure over the closing stretch. "I was thinking mostly to hang onto my lead during the last few holes. I got a game-changing birdie and was excited, but nervous."
Eleven-year-old Chloe Chen of North York topped a tightly contested MJT Girls 11-12 division with a solid 71. Chen credited her preparation for the victory, saying, "My mom helped me in the morning with practice," while her game plan was simply to ‘putt it close and do my best.’
Roy Qi, 10, of Richmond Hill, edged the MJT Boys 9-10 field by one shot with a winning score of 74. Qi said his mother's encouragement played a major role throughout the day. "My mom helped me emotionally," he shared, while his strategy was ‘don't hit it in the bunker and try to hit greens.’
A playoff was needed to settle the MJT Girls 9-10 division after Sophie Wang, 10, of Barrie, and nine-year-old Olivia Tu, from Markham, both finished tied for the lead with a score of 75. Wang secured the title with a par on the first extra hole. She expressed her appreciation afterward, saying, "I would like to thank my mom for caddying today and for calming me down after bad shots." Asked about the MJT experience, Wang summed it up with, "It's so fun and awesome."
Seven-year-old Lucas Lu of Toronto earned top honours in the MJT Boys 8U division with a winning score of 75. Lu credited ‘my dad for caddying and my teacher for fixing my swing’ before looking ahead to his golfing future. "I think this is the future to lead me to the PGA," he said of competing on the MJT.
