Race to Nationals intensifies at MJT Mini Tour’s Sawmill stop

On May 31, young golfers from across Ontario gathered at Sawmill Golf Course in Fenwick for the latest stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) Mini Tour. Played under beautiful spring skies, the event featured competition in five divisions as athletes aged 12U vied for titles, custom medals, and qualification spots into the MJT Mini Tour Nationals at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course in British Columbia.

Jaxon Mitchell of Burlington, ON, led the way in the MJT Boys 11-12 division, posting a score of 84 to secure the title. The 12-year-old credited his dad for helping him battle through a challenging stretch during the round, saying, “By 9 holes I was very down on myself, and he uplifted me and motivated me to play great.” Mitchell stayed resilient to earn top honours and, when asked to rate the event, gave it an enthusiastic ‘Infinity/10.’

North York's Chloe Chen captured the MJT Girls 11-12 division with a score of 88. The 11-year-old credited her support team for helping her through the round, saying, “My mom really helped me out there.” Despite feeling some pressure late in the day, Chen stayed composed, admitting, ‘I was a little nervous’ coming down the stretch.

A round of 77 earned 10-year-old James Plunkett of Guelph, ON, the MJT Boys 9-10 division title. Plunkett pointed to both his coach and caddie as key contributors to his success, saying, “My golf instructor, Dave Smallwood, and my caddie (my dad).” He also gave high praise to the event experience, rating it ‘5 Stars! Great course and great organization.’

Competing in the MJT Girls 9-10 division, Chloe Wang of Markham, ON, carded a winning score of 78. The 10-year-old was thrilled with the result, sharing, “It feels good and I'm very happy.” Wang also had glowing reviews of the tournament, adding, “I would rate it an 11/10 because it was fun and exciting. The course was nice and the weather was great. Keep it up!”

Seven-year-old Harrison Murray of Oakville, ON, enjoyed a memorable day in the MJT Boys 8U division, recording a score of 107. Murray credited his caddie for helping him throughout the round, saying, “Mom, my caddie [was instrumental]!” As he approached the closing holes, he kept his attention on a simple objective: ‘I was focused on my putts.’

Top finisher scores and the list of qualified players are noted below. Full results and winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin competition are posted on the MJT website here.
