Over 130 young golfers compete in packed weekend of MJT events in Humboldt
More than 130 players on Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), flooded to Humboldt Golf Club in Humboldt, SK, over June 13-14, for a successful weekend of competition across both its Mini Tour and Junior Tour circuits.
The MJT Mini Tour, designed for golfers aged 12U, was playing at Humboldt Golf Club on June 13 for the first time, with competitors battling in five divisions for custom medals, premium prizes, and qualifying spots into MJT Mini Tour Nationals at Tsawwassen Springs in British Columbia later this summer. At the same time, the Junior Tour’s MJT ZEAL Series for athletes aged 19U ran on both June 13 and 14, creating a huge showcase of junior golfing talent from across the region.
Results from the MJT Mini Tour at Humboldt Golf Club are detailed below.
Twelve-year-old Caleb O'Brien of Melville fired a strong round of 74 to capture the MJT Boys 11-12 title. O'Brien credited his support team for helping him reach the winner's circle, citing ‘mom for caddying for me for the first time and Keaton for practicing with me daily.’ He also gave high marks to the host venue and event as a ‘10/10 experience, fun course with nice greens and fairways giving chances for low scores.’
Saskatoon's Kensi Bourassa, 12, claimed top spot in the MJT Girls 11-12 division after posting a score of 93. Bourassa highlighted the role her mother played throughout the round, noting, “My mom was very helpful.” When asked what was going through her mind down the stretch, she kept it simple: “Just play golf and don't think anything negative.”
Prince Albert's Jozef Sierzycki earned the MJT Boys 9-10 crown with a round of 87. The 10-year-old credited his father for supporting him, saying, “My dad helped me get the win.” His game plan throughout the day was straightforward and effective: “Just play it safe on every shot and on every hole.”
Eight-year-old Aria Shoffner of St. Denis won the MJT Girls 9-10 title with a score of 110. Shoffner drew confidence from her father's encouragement during the round, sharing that he told her, ‘You can do this.’ Asked if she enjoys competing on the MJT, her answer was enthusiastic and concise: “I love it.”
Prince Albert's Aleksander Sierzycki topped the MJT Boys 8U division after carding a 94. The eight-year-old credited his father for helping him along the way, noting, “My dad gave me some tips.” When asked to rate his experience at the event, Sierzycki responded with a perfect “10 out of 10.”
