Prairie weather challenges MJT Mini Tour action at Elmwood
Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), brought a packed weekend of competition to Elmwood Golf Course in Swift Current, SK, from May 16–18, with an impressively large, combined field of 140 athletes competing across both the MJT Mini and Junior Tours. The Junior Tour stop was a major, three-day MJT adidas Golf Series event, while the Mini Tour for 12U, with results detailed below, ran on May 16 only.
The talented young golfers battled in five divisions for custom medals, premium prizes, and coveted qualifying spots into the MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course in British Columbia later this season. Players were tested by a full mix of prairie weather throughout the day, including rain, gusty winds, a brief burst of hail, and then warmer afternoon conditions that added another layer of challenge to the competition.
In the MJT Boys 11-12 division, 11-year-old Jace Fehr of Hague, SK, carded a solid 76 despite the weather to earn the title, after staying composed during a tense finish. Fehr shared that he was ‘just trying to keep it together’ coming down the stretch and later rated the tournament ‘10/10 because it was a lot of fun and good prizes.’
Twelve-year-old Lila Skeates of Calgary, AB, returned to competition in style, posting an 84 to top the MJT Girls 11-12 division. Skeates said it ‘feels good to compete again’ in her first tournament of the season, adding that she was ‘nervous and wondering if I was ahead or behind’ late in the round before securing the victory.
The MJT Boys 9-10 division saw Jerry King Zhao, 10, of Regina, SK, battle through difficult weather to claim the win with a score of 76. Zhao highlighted a clutch moment on the 16th hole, explaining that despite ‘pouring rain’ during the closing stretch, he managed to hole a five-yard putt after chipping from a steep ‘45-degree down slope.’ He later gave the tournament a ‘10/10’ rating.
Competing in the MJT Girls 9-10 division, nine-year-old Brynn Bollinger of Swift Current, SK, posted a score of 139 while enjoying the experience on home turf. Bollinger described the event as ‘really good and very fun,’ noting that conditions were ‘cold at first, but it was warm at the end.’
In the MJT Boys 8U division, Swift Current’s Jack Thoreson, aged eight, fired 111 while taking in the tournament atmosphere at Elmwood Golf Course. Thoreson praised the course conditions as ‘really good’ and summed up the experience by saying, ‘It was so much fun.’
Top finisher scores and the list of qualified players are noted below. Full results, as well as winners of the Long Drive competition and other awards, are posted on the MJT website
