MJT Mini Tour in Saskatchewan opens with major qualifying event at Estevan Woodlawn

The highly anticipated Saskatchewan season-opener of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Mini Tour teed off on May 2 at Estevan Woodlawn Golf Club in Estevan, SK, where a determined field of 12U athletes battled through windy conditions to launch their seasons. As Canada’s #1-played junior golf tour, MJT set the stage for early-season competition with division titles and direct qualifying spots on the line for the MJT Mini Tour Nationals at Tsawwassen Springs in BC, as well as the FCG World Golf Championship in Palm Desert, CA.

Playing on home turf, Parker Larsen-Stepp, 12, rose to the occasion to win the MJT Boys 11–12 division with a score of 78. Competing in his first tournament, Larsen-Stepp impressed with steady play in windy conditions. “It feels really good. I did way better than I thought I would for my first tournament,” he said. “The course was good, the greens were nice. It was a ton of fun, I would totally do it again.”

Kensi Bourassa (12) of Saskatoon, SK, edged out a one-stroke victory to capture the MJT Girls 11–12 title with a round of 92. Her hard work paid off early in the season, holding off the field in a tight finish. “It feels good because I did work hard over the winter,” she said. “They always put together the best tournaments.”

Ten-year-old Jerry King Zhao of Regina, SK, claimed the MJT Boys 9–10 division with a strong two-over-par 74, highlighted by three birdies. Battling the elements throughout the round, Zhao stayed composed on the greens. “It was pretty windy, but I still made a lot of putts,” he said, adding a simple “10/10” when rating the event.

In the MJT Boys 8U division, Xander Erdie (8) of Estevan, SK, secured the win with a score of 98, navigating a challenging course with confidence down the stretch. “The course was good, but it was windy,” he said, noting his mindset late in the round as simply “confident.”

Top finisher scores and the list of qualified players are noted below. Full results, as well as winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin competition are posted on the MJT website here.

The next MJT Mini Tour event in the province is the MJT Mini Tour at Elmwood Golf Course in Swift Current on May 16. For more information, or to view the upcoming Saskatchewan MJT Mini Tour schedule, please visit www.maplejt.com.
