Sensational 11-under from 10-year-old Zhao caps Alberta Mini Tour season at Triple Creek
A record-setting season of junior golf in Alberta came to a close on August 13, as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) brought its 2026 Mini Tour schedule to an exciting finish at Triple Creek Golf Club in Millet, AB. The season finale capped an exceptional year of participation and growth in the province, with young golfers aged 12 and under continuing to demonstrate the incredible momentum of junior golf both in Alberta and across Canada.
Players competed across six divisions for custom MJT medals, outstanding sponsor prizing, and the final provincial qualifying spots into the MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs in British Columbia later this month.
Ten-year-old Annabel Zhao travelled from Richmond, BC, and made the trip worthwhile with a brilliant 11-under 59, winning the MJT Girls 9–10 division in spectacular fashion. Zhao poured in seven birdies and two eagles, crediting her putting, driver and irons for the remarkable round. Her mindset was equally straightforward: “Focus on myself and believe in myself.”
Calgary’s Maverick Robillard, age nine, secured the MJT Boys 9–10 title on countback over fellow nine-year-old Blake Widmer of Edmonton, AB, after both carded rounds of 67. Robillard’s three-under performance featured five birdies and an eagle, with his approach centred on ‘playing safe off the tee and giving myself birdie chances on the green.’ He later called it an “amazing event” and praised the excellent condition of the golf course.
Eleven-year-old Rylan Hryhirchuk of Irma, AB, took the MJT Boys 11–12 title with a solid round of 72. Hryhirchuk pointed to a 40-foot putt on the second hole as the shot that stood out most and gave the MJT experience a perfect review: “10/10, very good. You get to see new people.”
The MJT Girls 11–12 division required extra holes after Mia He (11) of Edmonton, AB, and Brooke Sundquist (11) of Calgary, AB, both finished at 85. Sundquist prevailed on the second playoff hole, leaning on her driver throughout the day because ‘it would give me a good look at the green.’ After securing the title, she reflected, “It was my first playoff experience and I learned a lot!”
In the MJT Boys 8U division, Calgary’s Milan Bhamra (8) posted a strong 75 and nearly found the bottom of the cup twice in memorable fashion. Bhamra recalled his 9-iron tee shot hitting the pin on the fifth hole before a chip struck the pin on six and rated his MJT experience ‘10/10.’
At just seven years old, Hathaway Huang of Calgary, AB, completed the day with a 114 to win the MJT Girls 8U division. Huang summed up her strategy in one word, “Focus”, before sharing an enthusiastic endorsement of junior competition: “Keep up the event. It’s really important for kids growing up who play golf.”
Top finisher scores and the list of qualified players are noted below. Full results and winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin competition are posted on the MJT website
