Over 80 youth take part in MJT’s free Ford clinic and Mini Tour events in Calgary

More than 80 young golfers and aspiring newcomers gathered at Blue Devil Golf Club in Calgary, AB, on May 30, as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour, hosted a full day dedicated to junior golf development. The day featured a free Woodridge Ford Lincoln Go Golf! Junior Clinic, where kids were introduced to the game in a fun and welcoming environment, and an exciting MJT Mini Tour event showcasing Alberta’s top 12U competitors.

In the tournament, athletes took to the course to compete across six age divisions, battling for titles and qualifying spots into MJT Mini Tour Nationals in British Columbia. With strong participation, the event highlighted the growing momentum of junior golf in Alberta and the bright future of the game.

Wyatt Lazic continued his strong start to the season in the MJT Boys 11-12 division, carding a four-birdie round of 61 to earn his second consecutive Mini Tour victory. The Calgary golfer credited his support team for helping him get over the line. “My grandpa, who is my caddie, helped me get through this. My family was my motivation,” said Lazic. As the pressure mounted late in the round, he kept his focus on the task at hand. “I was trying to not think of others and just focus on myself and stick to the game plan.”

Six birdies highlighted an impressive performance from Calgary's Olivia Van Kesteren, who posted a winning score of 65 in the MJT Girls 11-12 division. The 12-year-old pointed to her dad as a key factor in her success, saying, “My dad helped me to get the win.” Van Kesteren also praised the event experience, adding, “I thought it was great, and it was well organized, which sets kids up for success.”

In the MJT Boys 9-10 division, nine-year-old Carter Davies fired a brilliant 61 featuring four birdies and an eagle. The Calgary player relied on a disciplined approach throughout the round. “To play safe, short of the hole and focus on putting and my pre-shot routine,” he said of his strategy. Davies also enjoyed the challenge of the host venue, noting, “Blue Devil is always a fun event with a great mix of holes and distances.”

Blake Nguyen made it back-to-back victories in the MJT Girls 9-10 division after recording three birdies and an eagle en route to a score of 75. The Calgary golfer credited her work on the greens for making the difference. “Putting. That is what pretty much saved me,” she said. Reflecting on the day, Nguyen added, “Everything was perfect.”

Two birdies helped eight-year-old Milan Bhamra shoot 69 and claim top honours in the MJT Boys 8U division. The Calgary native credited both his caddie and his mindset for the result. “My dad on the bag was great! It was more my focus and one shot at a time,” said Bhamra. He also gave the event high marks, calling it “10/10, awesome like all the others!”

Competing in the MJT Girls 8U division, Calgary's Jagger Nguyen recorded a score of 88 while enjoying another positive Mini Tour experience. Nguyen said her caddie played an important role throughout the round, noting that “My caddie helped with assistance.” Asked about the event, she summed it up simply: “Everything is so great.”
