Chang and Bonilla Martinez go low at WAGR-ranked MJT CWENCH Hydration Classic in Beeton

More than 90 of Canada’s top junior golfers descended on The Club at Bond Head in Beeton, ON, from August 8–10, for three days of high-level competition at the MJT CWENCH Hydration Classic. The WAGR-ranked championship marked the fourth MJT Elite Series event of the season in Ontario, bringing another strong field together for 54 holes of championship golf.

Players across five divisions were tested by the challenging layout and changing summer conditions throughout the weekend, as a storm rolled in and heavy winds and rain caused higher scores on the opening day. With custom MJT trophies, adidas Golf shoes, and direct qualifying spots into next month’s MJT National Tour Challenge on the line, the field battled through all three rounds, with Angelina Chang and Tomas Bonilla Martinez ultimately earning Low Overall Girls and Boys honours, respectively.

The event was proudly supported by CWENCH Hydration, the Official Hydration Partner of the MJT, helping keep Canada’s next generation of golfers fuelled throughout one of the Tour’s premier events.

Eighteen-year-old Tomas Bonilla Martinez of Aurora, ON, put together his best golf when it mattered in the MJT Junior Boys division, following an opening 73 with back-to-back three-under-par rounds of 69 to finish at 211. He carded 11 birdies and an eagle over 54 holes, relying on a straightforward game plan of ‘play safe and taking advantage of the short holes.’ Bonilla Martinez credited consistency rather than one defining moment, adding, “I didn't make a winning shot, I just played really solid all week.”

New Tecumseth’s Melina Turk posted solid rounds of 79, 77 and 78 for a 234 total to win the MJT Girls 15–19 division. The 16-year-old leaned on her touch around the greens, noting, “The strongest part of my game was my short game.” Two lengthy putts stood out in particular: “I had 2 long putts that were over 50 feet that I put to 4 feet or closer.”

In the MJT Juvenile Boys division, winner 16-year-old Max Roppel of Kincardine, ON, recorded strong rounds of 70, 73 and 72 for a 215 total, collecting 11 birdies and an eagle along the way. His approach remained uncomplicated throughout the three-day championship: “My strategy was to just play my game.” Roppel also praised the tournament experience, calling it “a really well put together event.”

Aurora’s Angelina Chang delivered three remarkably steady rounds of 75, 75 and 76 to finish at 226, winningthe MJT Girls U15 division title. The 12-year-old pointed to ‘my long game and approach shots’ as the strongest elements of her performance, while one well-executed chip proved especially memorable: “When I chipped it to 1 foot to make a good birdie.”

Thirteen-year-old Niklas Zierik of Collingwood, ON, saved his lowest score for the final round of the MJT Bantam Boys competition, improving seven strokes from a second-round 76 to close with a 69 and a winning220 total. Zierik tallied eight birdies and an eagle over three days, with the eagle coming in dramatic fashion on his final hole: “The last hole, I was 200 yards out and stuck it to 3 feet to make an eagle.” He rated the experience ‘10/10,’ citing a ‘very good course and great staff at the MJT.’
