123 juniors fight 3-day weather battle in elite MJT adidas Golf Series at Elmwood

Canada’s most-played competitive junior golf circuit, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), brought a packed weekend of competition to Elmwood Golf Course in Swift Current, SK, from May 16–18. An impressively large, combined field of 140 athletes competed across both the MJT Mini Tour and Junior Tour events, with Mini Tour athletes teeing it up on May 16 before Junior Tour golfers tackled a demanding three-round championship format over the weekend. The latter event, where 123 took part, was one of two MJT adidas Golf Series events taking place across Canada over the Victoria Day long weekend, running alongside a second stop in Alberta as the national series continues to draw strong fields from coast to coast.

The waitlisted field of juniors in the 54 hole, WAGR-ranked MJT Elite Series tournament somehow managed to play three rounds despite snowy weather causing delays, and battled in six divisions for trophies, adidas Golf shoes, and qualifying spots into the Golf Canada NextGen Prairie Championship, East Coast Junior Championship, and the MJT National Tour Challenge.

Ryan Mosher, 18, of Saskatoon, SK, put together an impressive week in the MJT Junior Boys division, firing progressively better rounds of 74, 72, and 71 to finish at 217 and edge out a tightly contested leaderboard by a single stroke. Mosher piled up 14 birdies over the three rounds and said afterward, “I am happy to win. It feels good to pull it off.” Reflecting on the conditions, he added, “Course was amazing for the time of year. Weather was a grind, but we figured it out.”

Playing in her final MJT event, Chloe Wills of Kyle, SK, closed the chapter in memorable fashion with victory in the MJT Girls 15-19 division at 237 (74-86-77). The 18-year-old recorded seven birdies and an eagle across the weekend to separate herself from a tie for second place. “I am very happy to finish my last MJT with a win,” said Wills, who also noted that while the second round brought ‘tough weather with the wind and rain,’ the final day ‘turned out to be a really nice day and the course was in good shape.’

Sixteen-year-old Jeevin Dhaliwal of Calgary, AB, rebounded nicely after opening with a 76, following it up with rounds of 73 and 72 to win with a score of 221 in the MJT Juvenile Boys division. Dhaliwal collected eight birdies over the tournament and described the result as ‘satisfying.’ He embraced the challenging conditions throughout the weekend, stating, “Weather was tough, but golf can be played in any weather, so no excuses necessary.” Dhaliwal also praised the tournament staff, calling it a ‘great run event.’

In the MJT Girls U15 division, Alyxa Melsted, 13, of Wynyard, SK, earned the division honours with rounds of 78, 90, and 84 for a 252 total. Down the stretch, Melsted focused on one simple approach: “Finish strong and make your putts.” She later gave the tournament a glowing ‘10/10’ rating, complimenting how smoothly the event was run.

Keaton Kreklewich of Melville, SK, steadily climbed throughout the weekend in the MJT Bantam Boys division, improving each day with scores of 76, 75, and 71 to win with a total score of 222. The 14-year-old handled the difficult weather impressively and said, “It feels great. It was a long weekend of weather, but I’m happy that I got it done.” Kreklewich also praised the playing conditions, noting that ‘the greens were nice, the fairways were pretty good, and the overall experience was great.’

Eleven-year-old Hudson Deibert of Regina, SK, continued his strong season with a consistent performance in the MJT Peewee Boys division to win with solid rounds of 76, 78, and 77 for a 231 total. Deibert said it ‘feels pretty good to win’ and enthusiastically rated the tournament ‘100/100.’
