Koh’s 10-under leads red-hot scoring at MJT FCG Worlds Qualifier in Tsawwassen
Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), delivered another standout stop on the West Coast with the MJT FCG Worlds Qualifier presented by RINK Golf Academy at Tsawwassen Springs on April 25–26. The second of two events in the MJT RINK Golf Academy Series drew a heavily waitlisted field, with 109 players in six divisions posting scores on the par 70 layout. In addition to trophies, prizes and rankings, players had the chance to qualify for the Canada-exclusive MJT spots into the FCG World Championship in CA this July, along with the East Coast Junior Championship, and count results towards Junior America’s Cup team qualifying.
Leading the charge was Andy Koh of Surrey, BC, who delivered a sensational 10-under-par performance (65-65=130) in the MJT Juvenile Boys division. Across the field, scoring remained red-hot with numerous rounds in the 60s, while two divisions required playoffs to determine champions. Another standout moment came courtesy of Lucas Lin (16) of West Vancouver, BC, who recorded an ace on the second hole in round one.
Jeffrey Jung (18), of Surrey, BC, edged out a highly contested MJT Junior Boys field, defeating Blake Thornhill of Whistler, BC, in a playoff after both players finished tied at 141 (68, 73). Jung sealed the victory on the second extra hole with a birdie, capping off a thrilling finish. “Playing the playoff I made two birdies for the win, it was great,” said Jung. “It was a really good experience to play in this great tournament. This event was amazing.”
Richmond, BC’s Olivia Li claimed the MJT Girls 15–19 title in spectacular fashion, defeating Lilian Zhao of Port Moody, BC, in a three-hole playoff after both players tied at 142. Li, age 12, fired rounds of 74 and 68 and secured the playoff win with a clutch birdie. “I feel really happy to win this tournament by winning the playoff. I learned a lot from the playoff,” she said, adding, “I think the course condition is great and thankful for the good weather on both days.”
Fifteen-year-old Andy Koh of Surrey, BC, delivered an absolutely stunning performance in the MJT Juvenile Boys division, posting back-to-back rounds of 65 (130) to pull away for a three-shot win. Koh’s dominant showing included 13 birdies and one eagle over the two days. “Course condition was great and the weather was amazing,” he said. “10/10 because of all the staff, it was amazing.”
Tiffany Rao, 12, of Vancouver, BC, captured the MJT Girls U15 title with rounds of 71 and 79 (150), holding off the field by a single stroke. Locked in a tight battle down the stretch, Rao stayed composed to secure the win. “I was telling myself to focus on every single shot because I needed to since I was tied with Quorra,” she said.
Surrey, BC’s James Qiu, 13, emerged from a tightly contested MJT Bantam Boys division, posting rounds of 70 and 71 (141) to claim the title. In a field where every shot mattered, Qiu’s steady play over both rounds proved the difference.
Hayden Soohyun Lee of Port Moody, BC, set the tone early in the MJT Peewee Boys division with an under-par 69 in round one, building a lead he would carry to victory with a 74 finish (143). The 11-year-old credited his support system after the win: “It feels great to win, I played really well. I have to thank Lee as my coach and my parents for driving me here.” Staying focused late, he added, “I was thinking about just confidently making pars down the stretch.”
