12U Canadian golf champions crowned at landmark 2025 MJT Mini Tour Nationals in British Columbia

The largest and most prestigious event of its kind for 12U golfers in Canada took place this past week, with a qualified field of 106 of the most talented young golfers from across the country congregating in British Columbia for the 2025 MJT Mini Tour National Championship on Canada's premier Junior Tour, the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT). Held on August 29 and 30 in perfect conditions at the fantastic Tsawwassen Springs Golf Club in Tsawwassen, the two-day invitation-only season finale yielded up outstanding scoring as competitors battled for National titles in six divisions, along with the chance to qualify for the Champion of Champions tournament in Ireland, 2026.

Players enjoyed a first-class experience, with top-notch tee gifts, refreshments, treats, and a bounty of prizes. They were also inspired by Guest Speakers, Aneesh Kaura, UBC and Cadence Ko, SFU, both MJT alumni, who attended the Welcome Reception on August 28.

The showcase of skill by the future stars of Canadian golf yielded crowning moments, as six young athletes rose to the occasion and etched their names into the record books as National Champions. In the MJT Boys 11-12 division, Surrey’s Minxing Matt Li, 12, delivered two brilliant rounds of 67 and 71 (138) to capture the National title in commanding style, while the MJT Girls 11-12 National Champion, Sedona Weitz, 12, of Foothills M.D., AB, saved her best for last, firing a closing 66 to finish at 140 and take home the trophy.

The MJT Boys 9-10 National Champion was Zhongjun Daniel Qi, 10, of Surrey, BC, who showed phenomenal poise by carding two outstanding rounds of 70 and 65 (135). The National title for MJT Girls 9-10 went to Vancouver’s Luna Zhou, 10, who fired 70 and 76 (146) to top the leaderboard.

In the youngest categories, eight-year-old Blake Widmer of Edmonton, AB, proved unstoppable with red hot rounds of 68 and 67 (135) to claim the MJT Boys 8U National Championship, while Richmond’s Yoyo Zhang, 8, wowed with back-to-back 70s (140) to earn the MJT Girls 8U National crown.
