Close finishes highlight MJT Mini Tour’s Order of Merit Invitational at Richmond Country Club
On March 26, an invited field of top young golfers aged just 12 and under teed off the MJT Mini Tour’s 2025 season on Canada’s leading Junior Golf Tour, competing in six divisions in the Order of Merit (OOM) Spring Invitational at Richmond Country Club, one of British Columbia’s top private golf courses. With the new season underway, players were also vying for coveted qualifying spots into two major events: the Quilchena OOM Invitational, also in Richmond, on May 24, and the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in Tsawwassen, BC, August 28-29.
Under cloudy skies some incredible scores and very close races were recorded, with division wins by Timothy Tong, 12, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Boys 11-12 (72), Jody Lee, 11, of Burnaby, BC, in MJT Girls 11-12 (71), Everett Quewezance, 10, from Kamloops, BC, in MJT Boys 9-10 (72), and Joanna Lin, 10, from Vancouver, BC, in MJT Girls 9-10 (74).
In the MJT 8U, with limited daylight remaining, the Boys and Girls divisions completed 17 and 16 holes respectively. Strong performances were seen by 7-year-old Brian Wang, of Vancouver, BC, who carded a 59 to win MJT Boys 8U, and 8-year-old Yoyo Zhang, of Richmond, BC, who shot 67 to claim the MJT Girls 8U title.

Timothy Tong, 12, of Vancouver, BC, came out on top in a nail-biting finish in the MJT Boys 11-12 division, winning in a countback over Mason Yuyuan Wang, 11, after both players finished at even-par 72. “My success wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my coach, Justin Min, who has helped me improve my technique and course strategy,” said Tong. “My mom also played a huge role—she always encourages me, takes me to practice, and supports me no matter what.”

Jody Li, 11, of Burnaby, BC, emerged on top of a tight race in the MJT Girls 11-12 division, carding a steady 1-under-par 71. With five birdies on the day, Li held her ground in a competitive field to take the win in style, proving that cool composure and sharp putting can go a long way.

Everett Quewezance, 10, of Kamloops, BC, fired a strong round of 72, highlighted by five birdies, to edge out a one-stroke victory the MJT Boys 9-10 division. When asked who helped him get to this point, he proudly credited ‘my Grandmas, Grandpa, and Dad’ as his biggest supporters. Quewezance was all smiles after the win, rating the tournament a “20/10,” and adding, “It is so good for juniors and starters!”

10-year-old Joanna Lin of Vancouver, BC, lit up the leaderboard in the MJT Girls 9-10 division with a sizzling 4-under-par 68, highlighted by two eagles and five birdies. She edged out the win by just a single stroke in a tightly contested division, later sharing, “I make sure to practice every day and have confidence in myself”—a mindset clearly paying off.

Brian Wang, a 7-year-old from Vancouver, BC, impressed in the MJT Boys 8U division with a strong 17-hole score of 74. His dedication to the game clearly paid off — “I practice golf every day in the morning,” he shared.

Eight-year-old Yoyo Zhang of Richmond, BC, shined in the MJT Girls 8U division, shooting a smooth 67 to take the win after 16 holes. She credited her ‘coach, mom, and dad’ for being instrumental in her success, and shared that her goal for the MJT season is to ‘keep up with my best effort.’
