Junior golf thrives as Ontario MJT season ends in three-way playoff at FireRock

Canada’s leading and most played junior circuit, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), is wrapping up its record-breaking Ontario season with the MJT Order of Merit Series at FireRock Golf Club in Komoka, ON, September 6-7. The championship-caliber layout, known for its dramatic elevation changes, pristine conditioning, and rolling fairways carved through natural terrain, provided a fitting stage for the waitlisted field of 70 athletes competing across six divisions. With top prizes and division titles on the line, this final regular season stop in Ontario underscored the incredible growth of junior golf in the province, where additional events were added to meet soaring demand. The health of the game is alive and well, as the MJT continues to set new participation benchmarks.

The MJT Girls 15-19 division came down to a dramatic three-way playoff after Peterborough’s Ayda Matthews, 17, Richmond Hill’s Lauren Perron, 16, and Oakville’s Ruitong (Evelyn) Liu, 15, all tied at 160 through two rounds. Matthews held her nerve on the first extra hole, rolling in a steady two-putt par to capture the division title and her first MJT victory.

Great scores were carded by both the Boys and Girls Low Overall winners, Andrew Burciul, 17, of Thorold, ON, in MJT Junior Boys (73-74=147) and Grace (HyunYi) Kim, 13, of Oakville, ON, in MJT Girls U15 (159)

Other fine performances resulted in division titles also being awarded to Trent Clarke, 16, from Vineland, ON, in MJT Juvenile Boys (148), Bryce Burridge, 14, from London, ON, in MJT Bantam Boys (145), and Noah Olver, 12, from Brights Grove, ON, in MJT Peewee Boys (148).
