Growing MJT Mini Tour in Atlantic Canada sees exciting playoff in 8U at Amherst

 
This past weekend, over 75 junior golfers from the Atlantic Canada leg of the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s number one Junior Tour, gathered at the picturesque Amherst Golf Club in Amherst, NS. Surrounded by the stunning views of the Tantramar Marsh under sunny skies and perfect temperatures, players competed in either the MJT Mini Tour for 12U on June 22, or the Junior Tour for 19U on June 22 and 23. Results from the 12U tournament are highlighted here.
 
Highlights of the tournament included a playoff in MJT Boys 8U Division, won by Tristan Breault, of Dieppe, NB over Callum Burge of Amherst, NS, after both tied for the lead with a score of 86. Other notable performances were recorded by Sophie Landry of Dieppe, NB, in MJT Girls 9-10 (100), Brooke Shepard from Fredericton, NB, in MJT Girls 11-12 (121), Joshua Nickerson from Kentville, NS in MJT Boys 9-10 (73) and Andrew MacDonald of Fall River, NS, in MJT Boys 11-12 (84). The event highlighted the MJT's unwavering commitment to the rapid growth of junior golf in the region, nurturing the next generation of golf champions. Ten-year-old Sophie Landry from Dieppe, NB, celebrated her fine performance on the vibrant MJT circuit after carding a score of 100 in the MJT Girls 8U division. Landry remarked, "This makes me confident that I can win the next one as well." With her spirits high, she eagerly sets her sights on the upcoming tournaments.

Brooke Shepard, 12, from Fredericton, NB, adopted a two-pronged approach to prepare for her tournament, crediting ‘lessons and going to bed early’ for her success. Reflecting on her performance in the MJT Girls 11-12 division, Shepard said, "The amount of pars that I got made me happy."

In an electrifying finale among the MJT Boys 8U, Tristan Breault, 8, from Dieppe, NB, clinched victory on the first hole of a playoff against Callum Burge, 7, of Amherst, NS. Breault attributed his win to ‘breathing techniques and staying calm,’ showcasing his composure under pressure.

An even par on the front nine set Joshua Nickerson, 10, up for success in the MJT Boys 9-10 Division. Reflecting on his victory, Nickerson expressed, "I want to keep doing well in my tournaments." This strong performance highlights his determination and sets the stage for continued success in future competitions.

In a thrilling finish, 10-year-old Andrew MacDonald edged out a one-stroke win in the MJT Boys 11-12 Division. MacDonald shared his strategy for success: "I stay focused on one shot at a time." His diligent preparation paid off, as he revealed, ‘I played at my club and practiced with my brother’ leading up to the tournament.

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s #1 Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
