12U Canadian golf champions crowned at 2024 MJT Mini Tour Nationals in BC
The largest and most prestigious event of its kind for 12U golfers took place this past week, when nearly 110 of the most talented young golfers from across Canada qualified for the 2024 MJT Mini Tour National Championship on Canada's premier Junior Tour, the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT). Held in perfect conditions at the fantastic Tsawwassen Springs Golf Club in Tsawwassen, BC, the two-day invitation-only season finale saw competitors from across the country battling it out for National titles in six divisions on August 30 and 31. The special event was a thrilling showcase of skill and determination as the future stars of Canadian golf chased their dreams.
Players enjoyed an unforgettable experience, with top-notch tee gifts, refreshments and treats, and a bounty of prizes. They were also inspired by Guest Speaker Matthew Steinbach, Head Coach of Simon Fraser University’s Men’s and Women’s Golf—Canada’s NCAA team—who attended the Welcome Reception.
Exceptional performances led to MJT Mini Tour National Titles being awarded to Jackson Wang, 12, of Surrey, BC, in MJT Boys 11-12 (136), Sedona Weitz, 11, of Foothills M.D., AB, in MJT Girls 11-12 (147), Everett Quewezance, 9, from Kamloops, BC, in MJT Boys 9-10 (136), Tiffany Yang, 10, from Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls 9-10 (146), Ethan Jiang, 8, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Boys 8U (137), and Annabel Zhao, 8, of Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls 8U (159).

Annabel Zhao, 8, from Richmond, BC, clinched the title of MJT Girls 8U National Champion, edging out another Richmond golfer, Chloe He, by just one stroke for the victory. Guided by her caddy's advice to ‘focus,’ Zhao's hard work paid off in a big way. "I practiced hard," she shared, as she ended her season on a triumphant note.

Tiffany Yang, 10, from Richmond, BC, soared to victory as the MJT Girls 9-10 National Champion, lighting up the course with an impressive seven birdies. She stated, "I prepared for this tournament physically by practicing." But her secret to staying focused and composed was simply ‘doing nothing.’ This calm and collected approach helped Yang rise above the competition and claim the coveted title by two shots.

Sedona Weitz, an 11-year-old talent from Foothills M.D., AB, claimed the MJT Girls 11-12 National Champion’s trophy in dramatic fashion, winning by a single stroke over Jody Li, 11, of Burnaby, BC. Weitz’s relentless determination was the key to her success, as she shared, "Physically, I worked on my putting. Mentally, I told myself to never give up." This victory was especially meaningful for Weitz, who proudly declared, "It's a great accomplishment for me as this is my dream—going golfing with my family and dog."

Vancouver’s eight-year-old Ethan Jiang won the MJT Boys 8U National Champion’s title with two spectacular under-par rounds. Jiang fired 68-69 to win by seven strokes, but humbly stated, "I don't think about my score." His hard work paid off, as he added, "I feel very proud because it is a big tournament." Jiang also praised the MJT experience, saying, "MJT has little stuff that is very fun."

Kamloops, BC’s nine-year-old phenom, Everett Quewezance, ran away with the MJT Boys 9-10 National Champion’s title after blazing his way around the course, firing two outstanding rounds of 67 and 69 including eight birdies and an eagle along the way. Quewezance’s secret to success? "Good conversation with playing partners and caddy daddy," he revealed, keeping the mood light and focused. Reflecting on his victory, Quewezance proudly stated, "This championship means that my hard work paid off. I plan to practice all winter to make my swing better!"

Brilliant rounds of 70, 66 fired by Jackson Wang, 12, from Surrey, BC, catapulted him to victory as the MJT Boys 11-12 National Champion, as he closed with an impressive final round of 4-under par after an even par start. His stellar performance, featuring six birdies and an eagle, was a clinic on dedication and composure. "I prepared by practicing my putting and iron shots a lot and tried to keep calm," Jackson shared. This win was particularly meaningful for him, as he reflected, "Winning this tournament meant a lot to me because this was my last year playing this tournament." A fitting finale for a true champion!
About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s #1 Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
