MJT Mini Tour BC wraps up at scenic Musqueam with eyes on Nationals

 
The final showdown of the 2024 MJT Mini Tour in British Columbia took place at the picturesque Musqueam Golf Course in Vancouver on August 19. Over 80 young golfers aged 12 and under on the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour came out to compete in six divisions, their eyes set on the final chance to improve their order of merit standings this season before the awards are presented at the MJT National Championship in Tsawwassen, BC, later this month. The beautiful creek, tree-lined fairways, and views of the Fraser River set the stage for this exciting event on Canada’s number one Junior Tour.
 
Great scoring led to division titles won by Stephen Gu, 12, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Boys 11-12 (61), Chloe Lam, 11, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Girls 11-12 (66), Hayden Soohyun Lee, 10, from Port Moody, BC, in MJT Boys 9-10 (64), April Zhang, 10, from Surrey, BC, in MJT Girls 9-10 (66), Eric Wu, 8, of Richmond, BC, in MJT Boys 8U (59), and Annabel Zhao, 8, from Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls 8U (71).

The 12U season in BC on Canada’s number one Junior Tour ends with the highly anticipated MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs on August 30-31. Annabel Zhao, an eight-year-old from Richmond, BC, secured her seventh MJT division title this year, adding to her impressive streak. "I practiced a lot," she shared, before confidently declaring, "I will practice a lot more!"

In a gripping finish, April Zhang, 10, from Surrey and Karyme Zhao, also 10, from Richmond, both carded impressive 66s. Zhang emerged victorious after a countback finish, securing the MJT Girls 9-10 Division title.

Ten-year-old Chloe Lam from Vancouver, BC, carded an excellent score, crediting her success to "practicing every day" and getting a "good sleep." Reflecting on the experience, she rated it a "10/10 because it was well organized, and the gifts are nice!"

Richmond’s Eric Wu, 8, dazzled with a phenomenal round of 59, finishing one under par. With four birdies lighting up the scorecard, Wu clinched the MJT Boys 8U title in style.

Hayden Soohyun Lee, 10, from Port Moody, BC, showcased his focus and preparation in a closely contested field, where six players finished with the top three scores. “I prepared for this tournament by stretching and practicing in my yard every day,” Lee shared, after he edged out a one stroke victory. His mental game was on point, as he added, “I stayed focused for the whole round by talking to myself to not get ahead of myself and not get too excited.”

Twelve-year-old Stephen Gu from Vancouver, BC, displayed his skills with a solid finish one at over par. Looking back on the pressure of the final stretch, he shared, "I knew I had stiff competition going into the last three holes, and it was very hard to stay focused, make putts, and hit good shots." With determination, he added, "Next year, I feel that I actually have a chance to win!"

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s #1 Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
