Qiu fires 68 to dominate MJT Mini Tour at Pitt Meadows Golf Club

 
The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) brought together a strong field of 75 talented golfers, all 12 and under, for an electrifying competition in the MJT Mini Tour at Pitt Meadows Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, BC, on August 13. Set on the private, challenging and mature 18-hole golf course, these young athletes showcased their skills across six divisions. With titles and coveted qualification spots in the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in Tsawwassen, BC, on the line, the spotlight was firmly on these rising stars of Canadian golf.
 
Highlighted with a fantastic score of 68 by 11-year-old James (Chenrui) Qiu, 11, from Surrey, BC, winner of MJT Boys 11-12, the event saw great scoring, leading to other division wins going to Jody Li, 11, from Burnaby, BC, in MJT Girls 11-12 (72), Theo Zhou, 10, from West Vancouver, BC, in MJT Boys 9-10 (70), Elizabeth Yang, 9, from Vancouver, BC, in MJT Girls 9-10 (74), Ethan Jiang, 8, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Boys 8U (72), and Annabel Zhao, 8, from Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls 8U (80).

Top scorers who were not already exempt qualified for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in Tsawwassen, BC, in August, and are listed below in a summary along with their scores and quotes from the division winners. Full results, as well as results from the Closest-to-the-Pin and Long Drive competitions, are posted on the MJT website here.

Eight-year-old Annabel Zhao from Richmond, BC, has added another medal to her impressive collection. "I practiced a lot and had a very good sleep. I am excited about the tournament because I can make new friends every time," Zhao commented, reflecting on her preparation and love for the game. Her enthusiasm for the MJT events was clear as she rated the experience a perfect "10/10," adding, "MJT is very well organized and I always have so much fun."

Elizabeth Yang, a nine-year-old golf enthusiast from Vancouver, BC, brought a playful spirit to the course, treating the competition like a "playdate with my friends." Her approach paid off, and she couldn't be happier with the experience. "I will rate it 10/10 because I think it is nice to meet my golfing friends and have a little prize at the end," Yang shared, capturing the joy and camaraderie of the day.

Jody Li, 11, from Burnaby, BC, displayed remarkable dedication and focus, culminating in an impressive under-par finish in MJT Girls 11-12. "I did lots of practice for the past week. I practiced hard to be able to qualify for the National Championship at Tsawwassen," Li stated, emphasizing the effort behind her impressive play. "I stay focused and only think about the shot that I am playing right there," she added.

Eight-year-old Ethan Jiang from Vancouver, BC, emerged victorious in the MJT Boys 8U division after a nail-biting countback finish against fellow eight-year-old Liam Chang of Victoria, BC. "I did pretty good after hitting good shots on the range," Jiang said, brimming with confidence. With his win in hand, he boldly declared, "I can win more!"

Ten-year-old Theo Zhou from West Vancouver, BC, continues his winning streak, capturing his second MJT title in MJT Boys 9-10. "I thought to myself that no matter what happens in the next couple of holes, I am very proud of myself for getting to this point," Zhou declared.

James (Chenrui) Qiu, 11, from Surrey, BC, fired an impressive four-under par 68, solidifying his reputation as a force to be reckoned with in MJT Boys 11-12. "I stayed under pressure for the last four holes," Qiu shared, demonstrating the poise and skill that have made him no stranger to the podium. Qiu confidently stated his mantra: "win more, play more."
