Juniors battle for spots in 2025 Champion of Champions at MJT Humber College PGM Series’ Lakeridge Links stop

 
The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held the final event in the Humber College PGM series at the stunning Lakeridge Links Golf Club in Brooklin, ON, on August 24-25. This highly anticipated, waitlisted tournament featured intense competition in six divisions, and despite a season marked by unpredictable weather, the weekend blessed competitors with beautiful blue skies and hot temperatures. With many juniors fighting for their last chance to secure a spot in the 2025 Champion of Champions World Invitational in Ross Inner, Enniskillen, UK, the event was a showcase of grit and talent.
 
Excellent scores were carded by both low overall division winners for Boys and Girls, Kris Gopisetty, 16, of Mississauga, ON, winner of MJT Juvenile Boys (74,72=146) and Kaprice Park, 14, from Oakville, ON, winner of MJT Girls U15 (76,74=150).
 
More great scoring led to division wins by Austin Brianka, 17, from Omemee, ON, in MJT Junior Boys (149), Sadie Westfall, 15, from Oshawa, ON, in MJT Girls 15-19 (177), Dustin Zhao, 12, from Maple, ON, in MJT Bantam Boys (146), and Chi-Shen Lin, 12, of Toronto, ON, in MJT Peewee Boys (142).

Austin Brianka, 17, from Omemee, ON, delivered a strong performance, securing a commanding nine-stroke lead with seven impressive birdies. “Coming down the stretch, I made sure to stay present and focused on hitting one shot at a time,” Brianka said. His dedication to staying in the moment paid off spectacularly, earning him top honours. Reflecting on the event, Brianka rated it a perfect 10/10, expressing heartfelt gratitude: “I thank everyone at MJT and the volunteers. I also wanted to thank my coaches and parents for getting me to where I am today.”

Kris Gopisetty, 16, from Mississauga, ON, transformed his game by embracing a fresh mindset and playing for the pure joy of it. This shift in perspective led to impressive results on the course. “I decided to look at golf from a different mindset,” Gopisetty explained, “I started playing golf for fun, and the results showed.” His newfound approach not only brought him victory but also boosted his confidence as he gears up for next year. “It gives me a lot of confidence going into the next year that I can close under pressure,” he added.

Dustin Zhao, a 12-year-old from Maple, ON, is quickly becoming a fixture in the winner's circle! With a winning formula that included staying hydrated and focused, Zhao powered through the competition with ease. “I feel happy,” Zhao shared while reflecting on the event.

Twelver-year-old Chi-Shen Lin from Toronto, ON, delivered an inspiring performance, pulling away from the competition in round one and never looking back. Despite battling an injury, Lin showcased incredible resilience and skill, ultimately noting, “My confidence has gone up!”

Fifteen-year-old Sadie Westfall from Oshawa, ON, demonstrated her commitment with a winning formula of ‘lots of practice and playtime at my home course, combined with plenty of sleep and healthy eating.’ Her dedication has already brought impressive results, but Westfall is not resting on her laurels. “I have to grind this winter,” she stated, eagerly anticipating even greater accomplishments in the coming season.

Kaprice Park, 14, from Oakville, ON, delivered an impressive performance to secure another win in the MJT winner’s circle, maintaining a commanding lead throughout the competition. Known for her exceptional consistency, Park’s victory was powered by meticulous on-course practice and a laser focus on her pre-shot routine. "This win will help me prepare for a better end of the season," she noted.
