Giesbrecht goes low in great field of 114 juniors at MJT’s windswept Warman stop
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s #1 Junior Tour, wrapped up its successful 2024 Saskatchewan season with a spectacular finale at The Legends Golf Club in Warman on August 24-25. The MJT Golf Saskatchewan Order of Merit (OOM) Championship saw 114 talented junior golfers aged 19 and under finish two rounds despite strong winds that wreaked havoc on day two. Players were competing for titles in six divisions, with some chasing their final chance to qualify for the 2025 Champion of Champions World Invitational in Ross Inner, Enniskillen, UK. The weekend’s action-packed competition showcased the exceptional talent and competitive spirit of Saskatchewan’s young golf stars, capping off a great season.
Fantastic scoring from Warman’s own Dane Giesbrecht, 17, led to him winning both the MJT Junior Boys and Low Overall titles, after he battled through the winds with blazing scores of 67,71=138. Girls Low Overall honours went to Chloe Wills, 16, from Kyle, SK, winner of MJT Girls 15-19, who fired rounds of 78,75 (153) for a two-stroke victory. Other leading performances led to division wins for Ethan Hunter, 15, of Casa Rio, SK, in MJT Juvenile Boys (144), Lucas Sturgeon, 14, of Saskatoon, SK, in MJT Bantam Boys (151), Yuna Lee, 14, from Regina, SK, in MJT Girls U15 (173), and Jun Lee, 11, from Regina, SK, in MJT Peewee Boys (147).

Seventeen-year-old Dane Giesbrecht from Warman, SK, delivered two exceptional rounds of 67 and 71, racking up 13 birdies and an eagle to take home the MJT Junior Boys and Boys low overall titles. By staying in his own headspace and focusing solely on his game, Giesbrecht secured a win that he describes as ‘huge’. He added, "My summer had been trending the right way for a while now, and to keep the solid play going means so much."

His preparation focused on turning weaknesses into strengths while maintaining his core game. “I try to just focus on my next shot and not look back on the past,” Hunter shared, embodying the mindset that fueled his standout performance.

Lucas Sturgeon, a 14-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, kept his cool and captured victory with a single-stroke lead, crediting his win to ‘constant practice in the week before’ and his ability to ‘just try to relax with all the interesting things happening.’ His composure under pressure was key to securing the win in a thrilling finish.

Practicing daily with a focus on continuous improvement, Lee quickly rebounded from any setbacks. "This win means a lot and gives me more confidence in myself. Also, this one was the one I wanted to win," he stated, reflecting on his well-deserved victory.

Sixteen-year-old Chloe Wills from Kyle, SK, secured her fourth division win of the season with a composed approach. "I had simple swing thoughts to help me stay focused and not overthink," she shared. Wills’ strategy of not focusing on scores— ‘I don't know what my competitors are at and I don't even know for sure what I’m at’—proved to be a winning mindset, leading her to another impressive victory.

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s #1 Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
