Leon and Law capture Calgary City Girls Championships at MJT Northern Alberta Extreme at Turner Valley

 
The MJT Northern Alberta Xtreme Classic (CLGA Championship) teed off on August 1-2 at the breathtaking Turner Valley Golf Course in Alberta. Nestled in the stunning foothills of the Rocky Mountains, this championship 18-hole course welcomed 86 junior golfers, aged 19 and under, from three provinces, competing in five  divisions. The event also marked the debut of MJT's new partner, Northern Alberta Xtreme, Edmonton’s premier in-school program for golfers in grades 7-12, offering its students unparalleled opportunities to elevate their game to elite levels. Despite windy weather adding an extra layer of challenge, the talented young athletes rose to the occasion, delivering an exhilarating display of skill and determination.
 
The Girls divisions were also competing for CLGA Junior Girls Championship titles in partnership with the Calgary Ladies Golf Association, adding an extra level of prestige to the competition.

Low overall honours for Boys was shared between Zaiden Dennis, 17, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Junior Boys (72,74=146) and Gavin Wrathall, 16, from Chestermere, AB, in MJT Juvenile Boys (73,73=146). Girls low overall went to Justine Leon, 14, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Girls U15 (77,71=148), who also took home the overall and 14U Calgary City Junior Girls Championship title.

Other leading performances were recorded by Jacob Natomagan, 13, of Sylvan Lake, AB, in MJT Bantam Boys (157) and MJT Girls 15-19 division winner (156), Cianna Law, 17, of Calgary, AB, who also secured the 15-19 titles for both MJT girls and Calgary City Junior Girls Championship title.

Zaiden Dennis, a 17-year-old from Calgary, AB, proved that a little getaway can be the ultimate training regimen. "I just got back from vacation, and I think a break like that really helped me recover, both mentally and physically," Dennis shared. After finishing second twice this year, he finally snagged the top spot. "It was awesome to get a win today.”

Gavin Wrathall, 16, from Chestermere, AB, dazzled, carding two rounds of 73 with a stunning eight birdies and an eagle. "I made sure to get good sleep," Wrathall revealed, hinting at his secret weapon. "I try not to get ahead of myself and just focus on the shot I have," he added, showing that his game plan is as smooth as his swing.

Jacob Natomagan, 13, from Sylvan Lake, AB, dominated the field with a commanding five-shot lead. "I prepare for these tournaments all the same way—I make sure I get good rest, stretch, and stay hydrated. I watch Bryson DeChambeau videos to mentally prepare," Natomagan revealed. Reflecting on his triumph, he said, "It feels good to get my first win out here. I started out the season with wrist surgery, so I couldn't play for 8 weeks. This shows that I'm healing well!" Looks like Natomagan's not just back in the game—he’s out to win it!

Cianna Law, 17, from Calgary, AB, soared with six birdies over two rounds, making her last tournament before heading to the U.S. an unforgettable one. "This is my last tournament before I leave for Western Illinois for school, so it definitely helps my confidence and feels great to end my junior career with a win," Law shared. Reflecting on the event, she added, "I would rate this event a 10/10. The tournament was so well run, and the course was in great shape." Looks like Law’s junior career is ending on a high note, with an MJT Girls 15-19 division win and the 15-19 Calgary City Junior Girls Championship title, boosting her confidence even further!

Fourteen-year-old Justine Leon from Calgary, AB, lit up the course with a stellar finish at 1-under par in round two to take home the MJT Girls U15 and the 14U Calgary City Junior Girls Championship titles. "I prepared for this tournament by practicing my short game," Leon revealed, showcasing her secret weapon. “It felt really nice to win my division and overall girls!" Leon also clinched the Girls Low Overall title, heading home well decorated with her impressive haul of awards.
