Hole-in-one, playoff and more highlight MJT’s FCG World Championship Qualifier at Morgan Creek

 

Some outstanding scores were recorded from a full field of highly talented junior golfers who recently competed in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT FCG World Golf Championship Series at Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey, BC, on April 6–7, including a hole-in-one on the third hole by Surrey’s own Tiger Yuanjun Liu, 13. 

Liu showcased remarkable skill in the opening round, carding a par, an eagle, and a hole-in-one within the first three holes. Liu posted amazing scores of 68-69 to tie for the lead in MJT Bantam Boys with young MJT veteran Tiger Zhao, 13, from Vancouver, BC (67-70). Zhao ultimately won the division in a nail-biting three-hole playoff.

Other high-performing division winners over the two days were George (JiaYu) Zhou, 17, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Junior Boys (145), Mandi Wang, 15, of Surrey, BC, in MJT Girls 15-19 (142), and Jackson Wang, 12, of Surrey, BC (134) in MJT Peewee Boys divisions respectively.

An incredible performance by 12-year-old Jenny Guo, 12, of West Vancouver, BC (68-70 =138), led to her claiming the Low Overall Girl’s title as the MJT Girls U15 winner, along with Soohan Park, 16, of Langley, BC, as Low Overall Boy (73-70=143) in the MJT Juvenile Boys division.  

A full field of players from four different provinces were competing under heavy skies for fantastic prizing in six divisions, as well as for several exemptions into major international events such as the FCG Callaway World Golf Championship, MJT Future Stars presented by ATB, and East Coast Junior Championship. A list of the qualified players is below, along with top finisher scores and quotes from the division winners.

George (JiaYu) Zhou, 17 of Vancouver, BC, claimed the title of MJT Junior Boys champion with his solid performance.

Mandi Wang of Surrey, BC, edged out a one stroke victory in the MJT Girls 15-19 division with strong scores of 69 and 73. The 15-year-old champion said, “It feels great to have my first win of the season. I am grateful for my parents and coach for always supporting me.” 

MJT Juvenile Boys: Par 72, Ydg 6367, Slope/Rating 134/71.2

1st: Soohan Park (16), Langley, BC | 73, 70 (143)

At one-under par, Soohan Park, 16 of Langley, BC solidified his spot as the MJT Juvenile and Low Overall Boys title holder. “I feel great,” said Park. “There were a lot of ups and downs, and my short game helped me recover from my mistakes.” 

MJT Bantam Boys: Par 72, Ydg 6002, Slope/Rating 126/69.2

1st (won playoff): Tiger Zhao (13), Vancouver, BC | 67, 70 (137)

3rd: Tiger Xie (13), Surrey, BC | 72, 66 (138)

Following a gripping three-hole playoff, 13-year-old Tiger Zhao from Vancouver, BC, clinched the coveted title in the MJT Bantam Boys division over hole-in-one scorer, Tiger Yuanjun Liu, 13 of Surrey. Reflecting on his victory, Zhao emphasized the strength of his chipping game throughout the weekend, stating, "My chipping has been really good throughout the last few tournaments." He continued, “I feel great to win my first on the MJT this season.”

MJT Girls U15: Par 73, Ydg 5280, Slope/Rating 128/71.0

1st: Jenny Guo (12), West Vancouver, BC | 68, 70 (138)        

2nd: Bihan(Bella) Yang (12), Vancouver , BC | 74, 72  (146)   

3rd: Grace Fan  (12), Vancouver, BC | 71, 78 (149)

Jenny Guo, a twelve-year-old from West Vancouver, BC, put on an incredible performance with fine scores of 68-70 to claim the MJT Girls Low Overall and U15 titles. Guo said, “It feels good to win my first MJT event this season.” When asked about what stands out about her game, she stated, “My driver shots were the best because I was hitting it really far and straight.” 

MJT Peewee Boys: Par 72, Ydg 5280, Slope/Rating 114/65.9

1st: Jackson Wang (12), Surrey, BC | 69, 65 (134)       

2nd: James (Chenrui) Qiu (11), Surrey, BC | 71, 70 (141)        

3rd: Daniel Lam (12), Vancouver, BC | 71, 75 (146)

The MJT Peewee Boys division was won by Jackson Wang of Surrey, BC, who at only 12 years of age, fired outstanding rounds of 69 and 65 to finish 10 under par. With three eagles and 10 birdies over the course of the weekend, Wang credits his “drivers and iron” for winning this tournament.
