Canada’s number one-played Junior Tour hosted both a two-day Junior Tour (19U) and one-day Mini Tour (12U) event at the pristine Sussex Golf and Curling Club in Sussex Corner, New Brunswick over the June 10-11 weekend. Players competed for titles in six divisions plus the chance to be short-listed for MJT Team Canada to the Jack Newton International Junior Classic in New South Wales, Australia.  

It was another successful weekend on the Atlantic Canada circuit, which has seen steady growth in the region this year; results of the Junior Tour (U19) stop are highlighted here. Low overall honours went to Callie Taylor, 17, of Quispamsis, NB, and 18-year-old Nicholas Colton of Bathurst, NB, in the Girls and Boys divisions respectively.  Short-listed positions on MJT Team Canada to Australia, which is for 15- to 17-year-olds as of September 26, 2023, went to Callie Taylor and Chase Burgess of Petitcodiac, NB.

Winning the MJT Girls 15-19 Division title was MJT veteran, Callie Taylor, 17, of Quispamsis, NB, who played steady and finished at 163.  “This is my first win of the season,” said Taylor.  “One thing that I feel aided in my victory was my warmup as well as my ability to stay focused on the shot ahead.”

Playing in her first MJT event was 13-year-old Frédérique Doiron, of Dieppe, NB, in the MJT Girls U15 Division.  “I hit the ball well and was pleased.”

Finn Grinton, 12, of Brookfield, NS, followed up a solid opening round of 75 to hold off his competitors in the MJT Peewee Boys Division for his third win of the season.  “This was a great weekend overall,” said Grinton.  “My irons were a great help; my putting was not very good at the start, but improved over the weekend,”

Nathan MacDonald, 12, of Fall River, NS, won his third event in a row on the MJT Atlantic Canada circuit, winning the MJT Bantam Boys title by seven shots over his nearest competitor.  “My birdie putt on 18 the first day was an important shot for me,” said MacDonald.  “I have been working on my irons since the last event.”

Chase Burgess, 16, of Petitcodiac, NB, was steady with a pair of 77’s to claim the MJT Juvenile Division title in a tight race.  “I went to the range the night before because my swing didn’t feel right,” said Burgess.  When asked what he is currently working on, Burgess replied, “hitting my driver consistently.”

Picking up his first win of the year was 18-year-old Nicholas Colton of Bathurst, NB, who won the MJT Boys Junior Division title.  “It feels really good,” said Colton.  “Staying focused on my own game is what gave me success in both rounds.”
